Math in Our World- Integers By: Mrs. Streib

Skyscrapers The tallest skyscraper in the world measures 2,723 feet. It is called the Burj Khalifa located in the United Arab Emirates. If a bird flies to the top of the building and dives 836 feet. Then it rises 22 feet for 10 minutes. How high is the bird now?

Airplanes A jet takes off from LNAS at 220 feet above sea level. The jet flies to 29,000 feet above sea level. How far above sea level did the jet fly?

Underground Parking Garages Sue parked her car in an underground parking garage. She rode the elevator to level 5 and got out but she couldn’t find her car. She got back in the elevator and rode it to level 15. Then she got back on and rode it to level 3. How many levels did she travel?

How many feet below the water? The tallest mountain on Earth is not Mt. Everest. Mt. Everest measures 29,035 ft. The actual tallest mountain is Mauna Kea. Mauna Kea measured from top to its base below sea level it beats Everest by 4,436 feet. How tall is Mauna Kea?

Famous Architecture The Great Wall of China was built in sections. One of the watchtowers, Wanjinglou, is 3,220 feet above sea level. Each year the height of the wall is reduced due to sandstorms as much as 16.4 feet per year. If that were to happen to Wanjinglou, how high would it be 5 years from now? 10 years from now?

Temperature The temperature on March 1 st was 20 degrees below zero. On March 2 nd the temperature was 20 degrees. What was the difference in temperature between March 1 st and 2 nd ?

Task Work with a partner to create a poster showing a real life integer setting. Your poster must include: Drawings of the real life setting A number line with both positive and negative numbers. Integer story problems (two per student) that answer the questions: Where did you start? How far did you go? Where are you now? Be sure that you can solve the problems
