Scaffolding For Success Using In2books in a Targeted Assistance Title I Program Deb H. Wyoming

Program description 30 minute sessions daily 4 – 5 students in each group Access to computers in school writing lab. Few students have internet connections at home. In2books is in addition to an intervention curriculum.

Why I chose In2books Integration of reading, writing and technology. Reading and writing for an authentic purpose. Develop higher level thinking skills. Improve literature discussion skills and learn how to have conversations about books. Reading a variety of genres. Adult pen pals to model and challenge student thinking. Students learn to write a friendly letter. Secure, closed environment.

Why I love In2books! My students are so motivated to read and write. It is easy to use - teacher and student friendly! Student choice of books Students keep their books. Expands awareness of other areas of the USA and other ways of thinking. Helpful and responsive In2books support. Parents are very supportive. GROWTH!

Scaffolding Computer Time In2Books introduced in a writing lab using a SMART Board. Teacher provides keyboarding assistance as appropriate.

Scaffolding for Reading Success Book selection is a guided choice. Books are read at school first, then taken home. Books are read in a variety of ways. Rereading for fluency and improved comprehension. Group book discussion before writing. Reciprocal teaching Paired reviews/Think, Pair, Share and other comprehension strategies.

Students read Independently In guided reading format With a partner

Scaffolding for Writing Success Notes taken or text marked while reading to recall ideas students want to include. Rough draft written on paper so focus is on thinking instead of keyboarding skills. Students use In2books planning outline. Teacher provides thought provoking questions to stimulate ideas for writing.

Jotting down ideas on sticky notes during reading.

Write rough draft

Thought provoking questions supplied while students write rough drafts.

Finished letter from a 4 th grader.

What my students say: “I keep my letters in a folder and when I’m having a bad day I look at them.” (Quinten-4 th grade) “My favorite part is that we get to keep the books.” (Serena- 5 th grade) “I hang my letters on my wall so I can see them.” (Kelcee-4 th grade) “My favorite part is writing and reading the letters. My pen pal likes hushpuppies and catfish…..What are hushpuppies?” (Jordan – 5 th grade) “My mom always wants to see my letters.” (Oscar-4 th grade)

Motivation + Integration + Scaffolding = In2books Success for Struggling Readers
