Habitat The hippo lives in Africa in rivers near grass lands, rainforest, swampy areas, and lakes. Some hippos sleep in the water with their ears and eyes up out of the water. 2

Diet Hippos are herbivores. Hippos eat plants like grass or flowers Baby hippos drink their mommy's milk. And hippos can eat other plants but they love grass. 3

Survival A hippo uses its big mouth to defend itself from alligators and people. And sometimes hippos roar! And hippos have to watch out for alligators in the water. Mommy hippos protect their babies from alligators also. 4

Other Facts Hippos can stay in the water for 14 hours. Hippos can stay underwater for 5 to 6 minutes. They weigh up to 10,000 pounds. When hippos go underwater they have closable nostrils so water does not get in their nostrils. 5
