Lesson Objectives Explain how energy in and from the atmosphere is distributed: Radiation Conduction Convection

Solar Fundamentals The sun is the source of all of the energy in the atmosphere This energy is transferred to the Earth and throughout the atmosphere by: Convection Conduction Radiation

Heat Transfer Convection The transfer of energy by the flow of a heated substance Responsible for the vertical motions of air, which causes different types of weather Works based on density

Daytime Convection Due to energy received from the sun Air around us gets warmer Becomes less dense and rises up The cool air moves from the sea to replace the warm air

Night time Convection At night, the reverse happens. The sea will be warmer than the land. Land cools quickly. Warmer air rises above the land and the cooler air replaced the same.

Heat Transfer Conduction Transfer of energy that occurs when molecules collide Affects only a very thin atmospheric layer near Earth’s surface

Heat Transfer Radiation Transfer of energy through space by visible light, UV radiation and other forms of electromagnetic waves Earth’s surface absorbs the solar radiation and then radiates energy with longer wavelengths, which warm the atmosphere through convection and conduction

Renewable Energy Source Renewables are a naturally occurring source of energy that do not come from a fossil or nuclear based fuel. The suns rays are turned into renewable energy in both indirect and direct manners.

Indirect Energy Source Indirectly, solar radiation influences the Earth's water, air current, and photosynthesis cycles These cycles are used to generate hydro, wind and wave, and bioenergy respectively.

Direct Energy Source Directly, solar radiation can be turned to electricity, as well as absorbed for heating
