Adjectives Recognizing and Working With Modifiers.

Adjective: What is It? Adjectives modify, strengthen, or describe NOUNS. Adjectives answer the questions: Which one? What kind of? How many about a NOUN. Example: That is a cool car. Cool describes car so “cool” is an ADJECTIVE. What kind of car? ….a “cool” car.

Look at this example: “My big cat ate three mice.” To find the adjective ask: Which cat? BIG cat. Cat is the NOUN. How many mice? THREE mice. Mice is the NOUN. BIG and THREE are adjectives.

Many times adjectives are preceded by articles like: A, An, and The. The best band is the Dibble band. “The” introduces the adjective “best” and “the” introduces the adjective Dibble. Remember, Dibble is an adjective because it modifies “band”,

The word that introduces an adjective is called a Determiner A, An, and The are determiners.

Let’s learn it as a formula: Look at it this way. Determiner + adjective + noun, or D A N

The Formula D A N D Adj Noun D I saw the black clouds spin out a Adj Noun huge tornado.

The (article) = determiner Black = adjective (what kind of) Clouds = noun A (article) = determiner Huge = adjective (what kind of) Tornado = noun
