Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 13–1) Main Idea Example 1:Problem-Solving Strategy

Main Idea/Vocabulary I will solve problems by using logical reasoning.

Example 1 Maggie, Sam, Aisha, and Nicolás each have a different colored notebook: blue, red, purple, and green. Use the clues to determine which person has each notebook.

Example 1 1.Sam and the girl with the green notebook are in the same class. 2.A girl has the purple notebook. 3.Nicolás and the person with the red notebook eat lunch together. 4.Maggie is not in the same class as Sam.

Example 1 Understand What facts do you know? The four clues that are listed on the previous slide. What do you need to find? Which person has each notebook.

Example 1 Plan You can use logical reasoning to find which person has each notebook. Make a table to help organize the information.

Example 1 Solve Place an “X” in each box that can’t be true. Clues 1 and 2 show that girls have the green and purple notebooks and the boys have the blue and red notebooks. Clue 3 shows that Nicolás does not have the red notebook. X XX XX XX XX yes X

Example 1 Solve Answer: So, Maggie has a purple notebook, Sam has a red notebook, Aisha has a green notebook, and Nicolás has a blue notebook. Clue 4 shows that Maggie is not in the same class as Sam, so she does not have the green notebook. X XX XX XX XX yes X X X

Example 2 Check Look back at the problem. Reread the clues to see if the answers match the clues. Since all of the answers match the clues, the solution is reasonable.
