Big Bangs at the Large Hadron Collider Experimental Particle Physics Group University of Arizona

What is the Large Hadron Collider?  CERN is located outside Geneva, Switzerland  The ring circumference is 18 miles  The energy of the LHC is now 8 TeV = 4 TeV + 4 TeV 2

What is the Large Hadron Collider? 3

Are There Big Bangs at the LHC? 4

What is the Higgs Boson and Have We Discovered It Yet? 5

6

Hot Off the Press Results  We definitely know where the Higgs is NOT hiding  And we have a hint (only) as to where it may be found 7

Does the Physics at the LHC Affect Me? 8

What Role Does UA Play? 9

10

What Role Does UA Play? 11

What’s Next?  I am happy to answer one or two pressing questions  There are three stations to visit where you will learn additional details about the Large Hadron Collider accelerator, the ATLAS experiment and UA’s participation this exciting project Feel free to visit any one or all of the stations! Enjoy your tour! 12

How Does the Physics at the LHC Affect Me?  Sometimes one simply has to wait for the full impact of science to be felt 13
