Still Life A lesson on Mixed Media Collage

What is a Still Life?

noun 1. a painting or drawing of an arrangement of objects.

noun 1. a piece of art made by sticking various different materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric onto a backing.

noun 1.the use of different forms of media especially within the arts.

What is Mixed Media?

Rubric Did the student effectively use their time in class? (10pts) Is the artwork clean and well thought out in design? (20 pts) Does the student show a great value range in their drawing portion of their artwork? (10 pts) Does a portion of the artwork show an understanding of the use of watercolor? (10 pts)

Rubric Does a portion of the artwork show effective use of collage? (10 pts) Does the student show correct use of oil pastels in a portion of their artwork? Outline of Week: Monday- Draw the outline of the still life objects.

Outline of Week: Tuesday- Finish drawing the outlines, & cut the artwork into four pieces. Begin completing the drawing portion.

Outline of Week: Wednesday- Finish the drawing portion and begin completing the watercolor portion.

Outline of Week: Thursday- Finish the watercolor portion and begin completing the oil pastel portion.

Outline of Week: Friday- DUE DATE! Finish the oil pastel portion and complete the collage portion. Glue all portions together and turn it in!

DO NOT go directly to these groups everyday, you will be dismissed DAILY to get into your groups. These are your groups for the remainder of the project.

Getting Supplies: On the back counter there is a variety of still life objects you may choose from. As a group you must pick at least 5 objects, no more than 8. ONE person in your group needs to write down in their sketchbook the different objects you chose.

Getting Supplies: Figure out a way to arrange these objects on the table in the middle of the group. Try and pick an interesting layout. YOU NEED TO REMEMBER THIS LAYOUT! Everyone needs to get out their phones and take a picture of what the layout looks like from their seat and save it!

Step 1 You will first draw the still life display on your paper with pencil. Draw the CONTOUR of the objects only, do NOT fill them in with value.

What is a Contour? noun 1. an outline of a shape or a form.

Draw exactly what you see. Make sure you “measure” to keep proportions correct. Measure with your pencil.

Step 2 Cut your paper into 4 separate pieces. You will want to make sure that these pieces are large. The pieces don’t have to be perfectly equal in size, but they need to be kind of close.

Making your final collage

On a black piece of paper, using a glue stick you will carefully line up the four pieces and glue them in place so that it makes one large collage.
