HAUORA Hauora is a concept that refers to a way we explore, describe and understand a person’s state of health or their wellbeing. It comprises four dimensions Physical (Taha tinana) – Physical body, its growth, ability to move and ways of caring for it Social (Taha whanau) – interpersonal relationships, social support, feelings of belonging Spiritual (Taha wairua) – values and beliefs important to the way people live, search for meaning/ purpose in life, goal setting, personal identity, connections with places/people Mental and Emotional (Taha hinengaro) - acknowledging and expressing thoughts and feelings, thinking processes

Place each statement in the dimension of Hauora that it best relates to: - Good work out- Sweating - Personal Challenges- Thrill of winning - Enjoyment with friends- believe the ref is wrong - good diet- Social Support - Setting goals - Fair play - Feeling included - Injury - Confidence- Sense of belonging - Motivation- Learning movement skills - Fatigue How else does participating in Physical Activity impact on an individuals Hauora?

Physical Taha Tinana Participation in physical activity develops physical skills. The ability to develop these skills is crucial to the participants enjoyment of the activity. If the participant has a HIGH level of skill then they are more likely to continue to participate If the participant has an INCREASING skill level they are more likely to want to continue participating. If they have a POOR skill level and are not improving they are likely NOT to continue. Describe the benefits of physical activity?

examples Maintains body weight at healthy level - Speeds up your metabolism increasing the body’s ability to burn energy - reduces disease eg heart disease - Healthy eating/ sufficient sleep Improves physical fitness - makes muscle stronger and more flexible -increased heart and lung capacity -improves muscle and joint function - Better quality of life and ability to cope with daily tasks and exercise Components of fitness: Cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength/endurance Learning movement skills - Improves skill level Components of fitness: Co-ordination, agility, reaction time, balance, flexibility, speed, power Injury, fatigue and discomfort - Pain when activities are not performed correctly/safely

Maintaining healthy body weight Energy in Energy out

The balancing act….. Energy in Energy out The food you eat needs to be balanced with the amount of exercise you expend. Energy which isn’t used is stored as fat in the body. If you eat too much and do not expend the energy there will be an increase in weight. Regular physical activity uses energy which can in turn can make a person look better, give more definition and shape and make it easier to move. Weight loss is an important factor in peoples involvement in physical activity.

Example Windsurfing influenced my physical well being when I was pulling up the sail to get started. I used all my arm strength because the sail was in the water and hard to lift out. My arms got tired and sore very quickly because I had to keep lifting the sail out of he water as I kept falling off the board due to my poor balance. Also the sea conditions were quite rough and the wind strong. My friend helped me by telling me to use my legs by ending my knees first and keep my back straight before I pulled up the sail. This made the pulling up of the sail much easier and my arms did not get tired.

Mental/ Emotional Strategizing (Team strategies) Tactics Decision Making Self Expression Self control Challenge Problem Solving Relaxing Including others Communication Experiencing success/faliure Feelings: Determination Enjoyment Excited Relieved Pleased Disappointed Sad Shocked Frustrated Energised Angry Elated

Mental/emotional Taha hinengaro Mental and emotional wellbeing is developed during physical activity through managing 1. Different emotional states (thoughts/feelings) 2. Success and failure (winning/losing) 3. Developing strategies 4. Making decisions

Mental/emotional Taha hinengaro Participation in physical activity can bring on a broad range of emotions and feelings. Peace HappinessAnger Sadness

Exercise 1 Choose one or more physical activities that you have participated in and describe a time you have felt each of the following 1. peace 2.happiness 3.sadness 4. anger - In your sentence include the activity along with how you felt and how this effected you Having to deal with intense emotion in physical activity can help us learn to deal with these emotions in life.

Activity 1. Describe feelings and emotions when you are experiencing - Success (eg Relieved) - Failure (eg Shocked) - Calm (eg Pleased) 2. What are some factors that influence these emotions? eg encouragement from team mates makes me feel happy, valued and have a sense of belonging within my team. This improves my motivation, enjoyment and desire to participate more actively and allows me to transfer this encouragement onto others.

Managing Emotions The emotional state a person is in during physical activity can have significant effects on the way they deal with situations. Being able to manage emotions in a healthy way is a valuable skill to be used in physical activity - Identify moments when your emotions have got the best of you

Attitudes towards winning and losing What is NZ’s societal attitudes towards winning and the effect of this on the individual and team? What is NZ’s societal attitudes towards losing and the effect of this on the individual and team? Describe the types of statements that are commonly used (by fans or the media) when national sports teams (All Blacks, Silver Ferns) win, and when they lose

Developing thinking and decision making Participation in physical activity allows a platform to be able to develop these skills. Team sports allow leadership opportunities for those who have more experience in the activity. These skills can be transferred into everyday life with large benefits to individuals. 1. How do you make effective decisions? 2. Give examples of when you would need to make a decision during physical activity?

Strategies/ Tactics Having knowledge of tactics and strategies influences the mental and emotional wellbeing of players resulting in being able to achieve success 1. Identify key strategies used in competition 2. Relate to your last team game eg deciding as a group who to leave last in bench ball 3. How did these strategies effect your motivation, enjoyment and team cohesion

Social Taha Whanau Being part of a group can provide many rewards as well as challenges. Dealing with these challenges requires good interpersonal skills Describe key interpersonal skills (refer back to social responsibility unit)

Physical activity has the potential to influence social wellbeing positively or negatively. Add these to your list and identify if its positive or negative with a P or N Group activity Build a sense of belonging to a group Get knowledge from others Can be forced to get on with others you don’t get along with Structured time for practices Let down by others behaviour, lack of effort Develop leadership skills Provide motivation and encouragement Conflict Support and care for one another Excluded by others from activity Harassment/bullying Spending time to develop friendships Improve co-operation and tolerance

Compare and contrast the effect on wellbeing between a team activity and individual activity For example: Team sport you are motivated by others however you are reliant on your own effort in an individual activity Identify both positive and negative aspects

Answers for teachers Reliant on own effort Don’t experience nastiness from others Time by self Might be more relaxing Don’t get encouragement or motivation from others No one to share experiences with

Friendships Participation in activity allows friendships to develop due to an increase of time spent together Supporting others Encouraging others Respectfulness Honesty Trust Faithfulness Do you enjoy exercising on your own or with other people? Why?

Taha Wairau What ambitions do you have for the future? Do you believe you can achieve these things? Why/Why not? What do you think your purpose is in life? When do you feel happy with yourself? When do you feel down? What things do you value in life?

Spiritual Taha Wairua Physical activity influences spirituality through giving people identity and developing confidence as well as allowing them to relax and enjoy their surroundings. Humans need to be spiritually fulfilled. Whether this is through a religious connection or a commitment to finding their personal identity. Spirituality is a personal issue which differs from person to person and often it takes considerable thought and discussion to develop this aspect of our haoura.

Personal identity A person’s personal identity is made up of ideas about who they think they are. People have different strengths some intellectual, some social, some physically, some spiritually. People who are physically gifted are able to express themselves through movement. This can help develop their identity.

Who we are! Genetic makeup Personal identity Upbringing Personal decisions

Developing confidence Participation in activity helps us to develop confidence by giving us a sense of achievement. This helps our self esteem. 1. If we are achieving a goal how does that make use feel? 2. Think about a subject/sport that you do not do very well in. Do you enjoy participating in this? How do you feel about it?

Self esteem Is the way a person feels about themselves Affects a persons whole life, how they present themselves, what type of challenges they set for themselves Involves thoughts about what others think of us and who we are. Should be based upon your own effort and actions.

Role play: Get yourself into groups of 6ish, you will be assigned whether you are role playing a situation where a person’s self esteem is enhanced or harmed as a result of participating in team sports and individual sports - You need to make sure you illustrate the consequences Team SportsIndividual Sport Self Esteem EnhancedSelf Esteem Harmed

Self esteem High self esteem Low self esteem Increased motivation Involvement in learning Successful performances Good relationships with others Person takes control of their lives Confident in themselves and their actions Speak positively about others Binge eating, drinking and drug taking Problems with anger Negative talk about others Inability to show love and affection Desperation to win others approval and will follow others leads. Bullying behaviour to try to feel good about themselves.

Other aspects of spirituality Discipline and perseverance Enjoyment Appreciation of surroundings Challenges

Activity CHOOSE A sport or physical activity you are passionate about and draw a diagram of something representing that eg horse for horseriding, netball, gridiron helmet etc. Fill in by stating how the activity helps your spirituality eg SOCCER, phys = co-ord (kicking, getting up to head), skill (dribbling, beating a player), power (heading, shooting) (not sunsmart!!), social = teamwork, comm(gameplans, att and def). Give details with precise examples.

Taha Tinana How fit do you think you are? What lifestyle factors make you fit/unfit? What are some things you like to do in your spare time? What areas of your fitness would you like to improve? What are areas of your nutrition you would like to improve? What things are you good at? What things are you not so good at?

Aspects of Hauora how are each of these affected by the 3 activities? Physical Mental/emotional SpiritualSocial
