Causes – Low Self Esteem systematic punishment, neglect or abuse failing to meet parental standards failing to meet peer-group standards being on the receiving end of other's stress belonging to a family/social group that others are prejudiced towards absence of praise, warmth, affection, interest being the odd one out, at home or at school

Causes - Eating Disorders anorexia: no clear cause; arises from a mix of many social, emotional, physical, and biological factors bulimia: again, no single cause; most people with bulimia have difficulty managing emotions; low self-esteem and concerns about weight and body image play major roles; combination of genetics, family behavior, social values, perfectionism, etc...

Symptoms – Low Self Esteem faulty self image inability to discern who and when to trust irrational and distorted self-statements lacking self confidence mind reading and projection ODC/addictive behaviors overly critical of self and others self-focused unreasonable expectations

Symptoms - Eating Disorders Anorexia: extreme weight loss, fatigue, insomnia, fainting, thinning or loss of hair, fear of weight gain, difficulty regulating emotion, perfectionism, distorted body image, irritability, anxiety, depression, refusing to eat, excessive exercising, social withdrawal and use of diet pills or laxatives. Bulimia: difficulty controlling food intake, pain and discomfort, loss of taste, secret eating, hiding food, major diet swings, visiting the bathroom after mealtime, excessive use of diet pills or laxatives, scrapes or calluses on knuckles, excessive exercise.

Prevention - Eating Disorders Universal Prevention: aimed to the general public; usually the audience doesn't show signs of eating disorders; just to raise awareness on healthy eating habits. Statistics – Low Self Esteem Among high school students, 44% of girls and 15% of guys are attempting to lose weight. Over 70% of girls age 15 to 17 avoid normal daily activities, such as attending school, when they feel bad about their looks. 75% of girls with low self-esteem reported engaging in negative activities like cutting, bullying, smoking, drinking, or disordered eating. This compares to 25% of girls with high self-esteem.

Statistics – Eating Disorders Anorexia is the third most common chronic illness among adolescents. 95% of those who have eating disorders are between the ages of 12 and 25.8 Over one-half of teenage girls and nearly one- third of teenage boys use unhealthy weight control behaviors such as skipping meals, fasting, smoking cigarettes, vomiting, and taking laxatives Only an estimated 5 to 15 percent of people with anorexia or bulimia are male
