OIED Contacts for Semester, Year, and Summer Programs Chanel Frisco Assistant Director, Education Abroad Ext: 2465 Donald White Advisor, Education Abroad Ext: 2124 Office of International Education & Development

Education Abroad Timeline: 1. Attend a Study Abroad Workshop 101 ASAP 2. Begin Researching Programs 3. Once the student has done some research, they should schedule appointments with OIED as needed 4. Begin OIED Online Application 5. OIED Reviews Application: Once the student’s application status changes from Pending to OIED Approved, the student will be prompted to complete the OIED Course Approval form OIED contacts the host institution to officially nominate the student. Acceptance to the program is determined by the host institution or program provider; OIED Approved status does not mean that they have been accepted into the program. 6. Student Attends Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation Office of International Education & Development

OIED’s Communication to Students Regarding Finding Courses Abroad: 1.Log-in to Degree Works: 2.Make a list of all of the Appalachian State courses needed to meet your graduation requirements. (Go over the list of Appstate courses included on your list with your academic advisor to be sure that you your list is correct. 3.Based on this list, look for Appstate course descriptions: Go to the websites of the international universities you are interested in applying to (listed on the OIED website) and search for course listings and course descriptions. Some sites are easy to navigate and some require more of a time commitment to find this information. 5.Once you have found the course lists and descriptions from the international university websites, compare the courses with similar titles and descriptions to the list of Appstate courses needed for your degree. 6.Save all of this information. You will need this at a later, after you have submitted your OIED application and it is time to complete the Course Approval Form. Office of International Education & Development

International Credit Evaluation Transferring credits from one educational system to another is a complex process. Countries approach course registration and the recording and reporting of grades in different ways. A committee is working to create country and institution specific credit evaluation tables for advisors and department chairs to use when advising students and giving approvals for study abroad programs. These resources will be available on our website and included with the OIED Course Approval Form Office of International Education & Development

Revised Credit Policies & Procedures: 1. Students must earn a grade of “C” or better (based on study abroad grading scales). 2. A course that carries lesser credit hours than an Appalachian course cannot be deemed “equivalent” but rather can be substituted for a requirement by the department. 3. Two or more courses can be combined to earn equivalent credit (total hrs must be = to or greater than the Appalachian course). 4. If a course carries more credit hours than the Appalachian course (after conversion), the department can agree to award major or free elective credit 5. If a country or institution specific credit evaluation table is unavailable, awarded credit hours will be determined by the contact hours associated with the international course. Office of International Education & Development

OIED Course Form Approval Changes 1. OIED Course Approval Forms will be available to the student to complete after they have submitted their online OIED application and their applications have been reviewed, and the application status changes from Pending to OIED Approved. 2. OIED will provide US credit conversion information on the approval form before students meet with departments and advisors. 3. Academic advisors’ signatures will now be included on the OIED Course Approval Form to ensure that students are on track with degree requirements and are not requesting duplicate credit. Advisors will sign the form after OIED has completed credit hour conversions and the chair has signed and listed Appstate equivalent courses on the form. 4. Departments will have the option to approve courses on an individual basis or as institutional credit. Office of International Education & Development
