Tuesday February 17, 2009 Agenda HOMEWORK STRIKE SYSTEM IN EFFECT (7): Composition notebook and pen/mechanical pencil [4 min] Warm up: “The Bet” [5 min] Discussion [10 min] Welcome to FCAT Bootcamp! [15 min] Popcorn Reading: “The Bet.” [15 min] Answer Questions at end. Objective(s): Apply knowledge of plot structure by completing Freytag’s Triangle on “The Bet.” Apply knowledge of irony and plot structure by answering questions at the end of reading. Important Dates: 2/25: Early Release Day/Film Club meeting 2/27: Film Club Viewing 3/4: FCA #7 3/10: FCAT

2/17/2009 [4 min] Imagine that someone bets you $2 million dollars to lock yourself up in prison for 15 years. Do you take the bet? Why or why not? Imagine that you do take the bet—since you’ll be in prison for the next 15 years, you’ll need things to occupy yourself—what sorts of things would you bring with you—assuming you could bring almost anything? Why would you bring these things with you? Do you think you’d last the whole 15 years? Why or why not? Timer

Today… I’ll be explaining what we’ll be doing in this class for the next 2 ½ weeks—in preparation for the FCAT. We’ll be reading “The Bet.” You’ll be answering questions at the end. Questions?

Welcome To FCAT Bootcamp! Some Behavioral Changes – Strike System is now at 7 until the FCAT. – No iPod’s, unless I tell you otherwise “Half-listening = half learning” – Want to be funny? Ask yourself: will my comment help or hurt the class You are all responsible for each other – Look how far you’ve come—don’t stop now!

Welcome To FCAT Bootcamp! Over the next 2 ½ weeks, we’ll be going through EVERY standard that will be on the FCAT. This will fully prepare you for your test.

Welcome To FCAT Bootcamp! What are the standards? – Plot Elements (Freytag) – Cause and Effect – Compare and Contrast – Main Idea – Organizational Patterns – Author’s Purpose – Research Tools – Multiple Sources – Validity and Reliability – Context Clues

Welcome To FCAT Bootcamp! Strengths – Plot Elements (90%+) – Compare and Contrast (75%+) – Cause and Effect (70%+) Weaknesses – Main Idea (30%) – Multiple Sources (20%)

Welcome To FCAT Bootcamp! Every day, we’ll cover 1-2 of these standards; we will shore up our weaknesses. Put in 100% effort; don’t “goof off.” Make a promise to not be absent—one day could make the difference. – Plan to be absent? See me ahead of time. – Sick? Come to my class and then go home OR go to the website. –

Welcome To FCAT Bootcamp! Are we “beating a dead horse”?

Welcome To FCAT Bootcamp! This week: – Plot Elements (2/16) – Plot Elements (2/17) – Organizational Patterns/Multiple Sources (2/18 or 2/19)

Welcome To FCAT Bootcamp! Questions?

Freytag’s Triangle The four parts of MOST fiction (made up) stories: – Exposition – Conflict: problem – Climax – Resolution: solves the problem

Let’s Read! Turn to pg. 210

Questions in Comp. Notebook Remember: DETAILS = higher grade 1.Explain the conflict of the story. 2.Explain the resolution of the story. Did it solve the original conflict? Why or why not? 3.Answer questions 2-6 on pg. 219
