1.3 Laboratory safety Safety rules about working and behaving in the laboratory: 1 Do not enter the laboratory unless a teacher is present. 2 Do not run or play in the laboratory. 3 Do not remove anything from the laboratory without your teacher’s permission.

1.3 Laboratory safety Safety rules about working and behaving in the laboratory: Fig. 1.6a Use a spatula to transfer solid chemicals 4 Never use your bare hands to transfer chemicals. Use a spatula or spoon. 5 Never leave experiments unattended. Fig. 1.6b The correct way of smelling a gas 6 Never smell gases directly - fan a little of the gas towards your nose.

Fig. 1.6c Point the mouth of a test tube away from anyone when holding the test tube for heating 8 Never taste anything without teacher’s permission.

If any chemicals get onto your skin or clothing, wash the affected area with plenty of water.
