Safety in the Laboratory

Science is a lot of fun but it can also be very dangerous. Always follow your teachers instructions. Lab activities are educational, not just for fun.

Don’t ever enter the lab without permission or without adult supervision.

Read all instructions before you begin any activity and ask questions if you do not understand.

Work only on activities assigned by your teacher and do not begin until told to by your teacher.

Do not eat or drink anything in the lab without permission.

Handle living animals only with permission and always with care.

Always tell your teacher if there’s an accident, even a little one!

Keep lab area clean and organized.

Do not wear baggy clothes that can catch on fire or open-toed shoes.

Wear goggles, gloves, and aprons when needed.

Tie back long hair and loose clothes to keep them away from fire.

Wave the fumes toward you, never smell them directly.

Always wash hands after a lab activity.
