Before European Settlement… A.D. 980 – Viking Erik the Red sailed to Greenland. A.D – Erik’s son Leif landed on modern-day Newfoundland.

Colonization by France and Great Britain 1497 – John Cabot claims area for England. 1600s – French show up and claim same area. Both countries interested in the fishing/fur trade. The countries fought for the land in the French and Indian War ( ).

Steps Toward Unity Canada became divided: Roman Catholic French Protestant English 1791 – British government split Canada into two provinces (Upper/Lower). This did not end conflict……
