Background and History 1994 was a break-out year for Carrey. He was cast in the lead roles in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), The Mask and Dumb and Dumber. Carrey grew up in Burlington, Ontario, for eight years, and attended Aldershot High School. He doesn't have a high school diploma. He left high school in the 9th grade, because his family was in hard economic times. His original family name - Carré - is French.
