Giving up Your Dream? Objective: To help students understand how flexibility and higher salary relate to mixing career and family, and to have young women recognize the advantages of careers not traditionally held by females.

Giving up on Your Dream? There are few VALID reasons for giving up on your dream. Example: Your eyesight fails FAA standards disallowing you BY LAW to become a pilot. Example: If the factory in your town closes (and your dream was to work there) you need an alternate plan.

Giving up on Your Dream? Cont. If you have come across an intriguing idea you hadn’t thought of before, you OWE IT TO YOURSELF to give this new dream serious consideration! People give up on their dreams too soon for the wrong reason……FEAR!

FEAR!  Fear can take many forms. – It can feel like obligation. – It can feel like loss of interest. – It can feel like falling in love (scary for men!). – Don’t give up your dreams because of fear! – Know it’s fear and CONQuer it!

If You’re a Woman Young women who hope to have families often think that the best career options for them are the, so- called traditional women’s jobs: – Nursing – Teaching – Clerical Work – Retail Sales – Waitressing

If You’re a Woman Cont. On the surface, these choices seem reasonable. Nurses and secretaries can usually drop in and out of the workforce if they want to spend a few years at home with their children. Teachers share the same vacations as their children. Waitresses and sales clerks do not need to thing about their jobs when they are off duty.

Reasoning Falls Apart Today, most women work outside the home even when they have small children. More that half of all women with children under the age of one are in the workforce. Many women are the sole support of their families. Today’s priorities are to earn a sufficient salary and to have the flexibility required for responsible parenting. (i.e. attend your child’s sports match, or attend their parent- teacher conference.)

Success on the Job Some women still think it’s not “Feminine” to be ambitious or successful at work. They are afraid that success on the job will take a heavy toll on their personal life-that they will not have the time or energy to marry our have children. This fear is largely unfounded! Today, 79% of women with children over the age of 6 work for pay and men are more likely to expect their wives to help support the family.

If You’re a Woman: Activity 211 Which careers below are mostly filled by men or women? Place a ‘M’ for Males, and a ‘F’ For Females. Now go back and circle the careers that would probably offer the most flexible hours (which workers could most easily take time off to attend their child’s activity in the afternoon). Some careers are more flexible than others!

Chart the Graph! Activity 212 Look at the list of jobs at the top of Activity 212. List those careers on the left-hand side that are held mostly by women. Next, add the jobs that are mostly held by men. Star the careers that you consider, “flexible” in which workers can choose their own hours.

Charting: Act 213 Use a pencil to chart the average salaries of the flexible careers. Use a pen to chart the annual average salaries of the non-flexible careers. Suppose you are a woman with three children and found yourself the sole support of your family. How much do you think this community needs a year to live in minimal comfort? Write this number in the blank on Activity 213

Charting Cont.: Activity 213 Now draw a horizontal line across the chart at this dollar level. Which careers from the list would be most suitable for parenting and provide both flexibility and an adequate salary? List those on the lines at the bottom of Activity 213. Circle the careers that require either a college or vocational degree or some type of special training. Do more men or women currently hold these jobs? Circle the answer on Activity 213
