Born in Virginia Father died when Jefferson was 14 – left him 5,000 acre estate Father also provided him with education

Attended the College of William and Mary for two years Became a lawyer Was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses (1769)

1774 – wrote pamphlet “A Summary View of the Rights of British America” Persuasively argued the Parliament had no authority in the colonies

Delegate to the Second Continental Congress (1775- 1776) Wrote the “Declaration” Served in the Virginia House of Representatives (1776-1779)

Governor of Virginia (1779-1781) Appointed minister to France (1785-1789)
