SWEA Contamination & Planetary Protection SWEA Pre-Shipment Review December 01-02, 2011 IRAP, Toulouse

Dec , 2011 SWEA PSR Presentation Outline What has been done  Contamination  Planetary Protection Future work  Contamination  Planetary Protection 2

Dec , 2011 SWEA PSR What has been done for “usual” contamination Implementation of a vertical laminar flow cabinet ISO5 (class 100) dedicated to MAVEN only Staff traffic control (only needed personnel were granted access) by closing of the area with dividing-walls Storage in a vacuum container with pressure <10 -1 mBar (7.5·10 -3 Torr) Installation of a clean-room tent over the test bench 3

Dec , 2011 SWEA PSR What has been done for Planetary Protection (1/3) Use of sterile garments (suit, hood, facemask and ESD gloves) Use of sterile hydro-alcoholic solution for cleaning hands Cleaning of surfaces using pre-wetted sterile wipers (TX3217) and disinfectant spray Bacty- SP® IPA (70% concentration) Note: this was also performed by the company subcontracted for soldering the EEE components on the boards. 4

Dec , 2011 SWEA PSR What has been done for Planetary Protection (2/3) Assay of work area (use of Petri dishes) Performing DHMR on all 3 boards (with components) : 110°C for 72 hours (62.5 hours required) at mbar (7.5·10 -3 Torr) Training any transfer out of the contamination-controlled area Performing UV decontamination 5 Working surface (ISO5 cabinet)0 CFU/100 cm² Vertical window (ISO5 cabinet)0 CFU/100 cm² Shelf in vacuum container0 CFU/100 cm²

Dec , 2011 SWEA PSR Future work: (1/3) Performing final particular contamination inspection  Control up to VC-HS, as per SSL Contamination Control Plan (ref MAVEN_PF_QA_012). Note: Complementary inspection with UV light source should be performed. 6 Note for VC-HS : Incident light level ≥ 100 foot candles Observation distance from 6 to 18 inches. Remarks: –Exposed and accessible surfaces only. –Initial cleaning is mandatory. –Cleaning is required if the surface in question does not meet VC under the specified incident light and observation distance conditions.

Dec , 2011 SWEA PSR Future work: (2/3) Performing PP assays  Have 2 biological assays performed just prior close-out; one being representative of the box and the other of the PWB, as per SSL Planetary Protection Implementation Plan (ref. MAVEN_PF_QA_015) 7

Dec , 2011 SWEA PSR Future work: (3/3) Transportation to SSL  Container: antistatic polycarbonate  Bagging: sealed / clean / sterilized by UV decontamination / 2 layers approved material / purged 8
