R Keys to Collective Impact

Isolated Impact  Most funders are faced with the task of choosing a few grantees  Which organizations make the greatest contribution toward solving a social problem?  Grantees compete to be chosen by emphasizing how their individual activities produce the greatest effect.  Each organization is judged on its ability to achieve  This is independent of the numerous others that also influence the issue.  Every attempt is made to isolate that grantee’s individual influence from all other variables.  Jack of all trades master of none – together we serve all  This is ISOLATED IMPACT.  As long as we continue to function as independent operators working in silos competing for limited resources….. We will not achieve our collective potential, and we will not effectively serve Our Military Family

5 Keys to Collective Success  What is necessary for a consortium working to solve the same social issue to create COLLECTIVE IMPACT instead of ISOLATED IMAPCT?  Stanford study involving 300 leaders from: foundations, non-profits, and universities to develop the 5 Keys to Collective Success  Common Agenda - R4 Member Objectives  Shared Measurements - Research and Evaluation Tools  Continuous Communication - Networking and Education  Mutually Reinforcing Activities - Continuum of Care, and diversity of member offerings  Backbone Support Organization – Creation of R4 Alliance

Chairman's Office of Reintegration  Admiral Mullen formed this office applying the concepts of the 5 keys to the veterans community  Publication “Sea of Goodwill Whitepaper” and “After the Sea of Goodwill”  R4 formed in response to this call to action  R4 used these documents as the foundation of developing our concepts
