Graphical User Interface (GUI) GUIs use items called WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus and Pointing Device). GUIs are used in both System Software and Application Software. Windows are the main method used to display and interact with software. Each time an Application is launched a new Window opens that contains Windows objects such as Menus. Icons are small graphical pictures that are active and represent Applications that can be clicked using a mouse to be started or opened. Menus enable the user to navigate through the software. Functions such as opening a file can be implemented using a menu item. Pointing Device can be a mouse or a keyboard (using the arrow keys). The use can select items using mouse buttons.

GUI Design A well-designed GUI is easy and intuitive to use and navigate. The GUI shown on the next slide shows the elements of a well-designed GUI: consistency of elements functionality navigation radio buttons and list boxes borders and white space instructions to the user inclusive design features other interface elements and features.
