William Carlos Williams Born in New Jersey 1883 – this year would be his 125th birthday! Fell in love with poetry while in medical school at the University of Pennsylvania Followed his parents’ wishes and became a pediatrician Practiced medicine for forty years

His medical career gave him the financial stability to pursue his poetry Also provided him with an “intimate insight into the lives of common people” Many of his poems were written on prescription pads while he was visiting patients, then typed them on this typewriter
