OPTIMIZATION OF DROPWISE CONDENSATION(DWC) USING VARIOUS SHAPES OF TUBES WITH INCLINATIONS MEMBERS :( Batch-3 )  S.Sarathchandran. ( )  R.Ananth. ( )  S.Arunsanthoshkumar. ( )  G.Arunkumar. ( ) GUIDE: Mr.S.Rajkumar,M.Tech.

PROBLEM: The efficiency of thermal power plant in Indian scenario is almost 36% to 40%. The remaining energy has been wasted mainly in condenser unit. The condenser unit absorbs approximately 55% to 60% of power produced in the plant.

REASON FOR CHOOSING THE PROJECT: The main focus of this project work is to reduce the energy consumption in condenser obviously the total efficiency of the power plant will be increased. Presently all the thermal power plants are following Film wise condensation (FWC) process. In FWC initial condensation rate is very faster after that condensation rate is lower. Hence the condensation process has been changed to Drop wise condensation (DWC) In DWC droplets falls down leaving the free surfaces so that the rate of condensation will be increased. DWC is under development as it offers extremely high heat transfer rate (4-8 times higher- proved in Gold) by preventing the build up of the insulating liquid layer (condensate) formed in the FWC.

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of our project is to break the insulating condensate formed on the cold surface so as to improve the heat transfer rate by introducing coatings like TEFLON, etc.,. From the result of DWC, CORRELATION will be introduced for DWC of various shapes of tubes (like circular, elliptical and rhombus) with inclinations( 15,30,45 degrees).

EXPERIMENTAL SETUP:

TIMELINE: Phase1:literature review and material collection for the experimental setup (Jan end) Phase2:Experiments with inclination arrangements (Feb end) Phase3:Optimization of DWC with inclination and introducing correlations for DWC (beginning of march) report submission (end of march)
