1 & 2 Peter Class Schedule

2 Peter Chapter 2 Overview The characteristics of false teachers – v1 to v3 The consequences of their teaching – v4 to v6 The rescue of righteous/godly – v7 to v9 The conduct of false teachers – v10 to v19 The condemnation of false teachers – v20 to v22

2 Peter 2:4-9 (NASB) 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; 5 and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter; 7 and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men 8 (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,

2 Peter 2:4-9 (NASB) 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; 5 and (if God) did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter; 7 and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men 8 (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,

Summary of 2 Peter 2:4-6 "Now Peter will give us three examples of apostates in the past. 1.An example is of the angels who sinned (v. 4), and it is an example of how the Devil works. 2. An example is that of the world of Noah's day (v. 5) and it is the example of the world. 3.An example (v. 6) is the turning of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, and that is the example of the flesh.” * Note: 2 Pet 2:3b “ their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep” - introduces verses 4 to 6 * Constable

5 and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; For if God - did not spare the ancient world (2 nd if) did not spare (to spare, as implying forgiveness) – same as in v4 ancient - old, expressing that which was from the beginning related passage Gen 6:5-7, 2 Peter 3:5-7 but preserved Noah, preacher of righteousness preserved - to guard, protect; - see 2 Thess 3:3

5 and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; preacher – a herald, crier, proclaimer “the word denotes one who is employed by God in the work of proclaiming salvation”- Zodhiates see 1 Tim 2:7 How was Noah a preacher of righteousness? “By his words and deeds Noah proclaimed righteousness to his ungodly neighbors” – Constable – Gen 6:9, Heb 11:7 with seven others – lit: it means one of eight when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly see Luke 17:27 Many Bible students believe that the pattern of Noah's deliverance before the Flood prefigures the pretribulation rapture of Christians. - Constable

6 and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter; and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and (3 rd if) Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes see Luke 17:28-29, Gen 19:24-25 having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter see Jude 1:7

7 and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men and if He rescued righteous Lot (4 th if) rescued - to rescue from, to preserve from, and so, to deliver – see Lot’s rescue Gen 19:15-17 oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men oppressed – lit: being distressed sensual - licentiousness, indecency, wantonness unprincipled - lawless, wicked “completely worn down by the manner of life of the lawless in the sphere of unbridled lust” - Wuest

8 (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds)*, for by what he saw and heard that righteous man saw and heard – lit: seeing and hearing righteous man (2 nd time Lot is called a righteous man) felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds righteous soul (3 rd time Lot is referred to as righteous) tormented - to torture, afflict with pain, vex, harass lawless deeds - transgressing the law, wicked “Lot not only refused to join his neighbors, but he did not allow himself to sink into passive indifference toward their sin” Hiebert * an amplification of verse 7

9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, after four if statements we see a concluding then statement both positive and negative the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation rescue – same as in verse 7 – other verses show God’s care for us - see 2 Tim 3:10-11 and 2 Tim 4:17 godly - it refers to believers, in opposition to unrighteous temptation - peirasmos - "trials" with a beneficial purpose and effect -1 Pet 1:6-7 and 4:12-13 James 1:2

9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment keep - of judicial reservation by God in view of future doom, 2 Pet. 2:17; 2 Pet. 3:7; Jude 1:6, 13 All three of Peter's examples (vv. 4-6) deal with unbelievers. These were the primary focus of Peter's warning. - Constable under punishment – lit: being punished day of judgment – great white throne judgment “and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.” - NIV
