RESEARCH

Research Nuggets….  Through September:  Proposals awarded: $10.8M  Proposals submitted: $28.4M  Kick-off meetings were held on campus for two new NSF I/UCRC’s:  Center for Friction Stir Processing, PI: R. Mishra  Center for Intelligent Maintenance Systems, PI: J. Saragapani  MOU signed with USGS on October 10th establishes a formal working relationship with UMR’s Natural Hazards Mitigation Institute  A grant from the USGS has enabled UMR faculty to be in New Orleans collecting “perishable” data. Focus is on environmental remediation….  The F-15 System Program Office at Warner Robins ALC (Robins AFB, AG.) have now converted to the use of UMR’s Non-Chromated Epoxy Primer (licensed by DEFT) for ALL F-15's at this facility, and are in the process of converting the overseas Depot Contract facility(Korean Air/Kim Hae,Korea) to it's use also.  The contract is in place from TSWG for UMR faculty lead by Tony Nanni to blow up a bridge in Italy in 2006

6-Week Pilot Program for Academic Success l Program targets students who are currently on academic probation or are academically deficient l 6-week pilot program begins Monday, Oct. 10, 2005 l 25 UMR students are participating in order to improve their academic success l Course content delivered by UMR faculty and students

Experiential Learning l UGS recently established a Service Learning Advisory Committee, involving 16 UMR faculty and staff. l The committee will oversee the development of the campus-wide Service Learning Program at UMR. l The Mission: To make reflective service learning an integral part of the education and life experiences of UMR students.

Center for Educational Research & Teaching Innovation (CERTI) l New! University Center Concept Classroom – for faculty who use active, collaborative, experiential or technology-enhanced learning strategies.

SCHOOL OF EXTENDED LEARNING

School of Extended Learning l Three new distance MS degree programs have started this fall. They are: »Civil Engineering »Information Science and Technology »Mechanical Engineering l The International Affairs Office is coordinating a program of eight non-credit short courses being taught in cooperation with King Saud University in Saudi Arabia. The short courses are sponsored by Boeing and participants come from companies located in Saudi Arabia. Courses are transmitted over the internet and permit two way audio/visual communication between the instructor and the participants. The departments involved are Electrical & Computer Engineering, Engineering Management, and Information Science & Technology. l UMR is now in a position to take advantage of expertise outside the confines of our campus. The VCC is bringing in a course from the University of Naples, Italy this semester for the Architectural Engineering program at UMR and previously was involved in bringing in a course from Penn State for this same program.
