Migrating to Editorial Manager Why is BioMed Central migrating to Editorial Manager? Industry-standard submission and manuscript management system Widely known system that many authors and reviewers are already familiar with Supports many of the functions which Editors have been asking for (and many more besides) Provides high performance with very little downtime

Migration & Training, Timescales Migration & Training 1.Journal questionnaire re. peer review process, editorial model, etc. 2.Agree migration date 3.Build and configure EM site 4.Enable testing site for selected users 5.Demonstrations and 1:1 training available for editors Timescales Migration completion goal: early 2015 Your Journal Development Editor will contact you in advance to discuss migration of your journal

Feature highlights Increased flexibility Journals can customise their reviewer report forms, and can have different questions for separate article types if required Journals can customise their own templates Journals can customise submission screens based on article type Authors will have no file size limit on submission

Quick Overview of Editorial Manager: Welcome Page Menu: log in, help, Instructions for Authors etc.

Editorial Manager: Login Page As an editor, type your username and password and click Editor Login. Forgot your access details? Click Send Username/Password.

Editorial Manager: Editor’s Main Menu Overview of manuscripts ready for your decision process.

Editorial Manager: Editor’s Main Menu New submissions in Editor To-Do List. To begin working, click on New Assignments.

Editorial Manager: Editor’s View of a Manuscript To see a PDF version, click on View Submission. History contains all correspondence and actions for a manuscript. To select reviewers, click on Invite Reviewers.

Editorial Manager: Editor Invites Reviewers Click on Go to find a reviewer.

Editorial Manager: Editor Invites Reviewers Enter name and click on Search. Or press the space bar and click on Search to see all existing reviewers. Click on Register and Invite New Reviewer to add to your database.

Editorial Manager: Editor Invites Reviewers Select reviewer you wish to invite. Click on Send Default Letter.

Improve performance and stability Refresh design and user experience New functionality e.g. faceted search, article recommendations, enhanced reader Faster updates to non-article content Enhance brand, build trust and credibility, grow user satisfaction When will it happen? Development starts in May 2014

For Editors pages What is it? Relaunched Editors pages, with information on editorial policies, editors tools, handling manuscripts, journal development and promotion, and more What’s the benefit? An overview of information, guides and services from BioMed Central, to support editors in editorial tasks and responsibilities When will it happen? Live in March 2014

Editor and Reviewer Acknowledgments What is it? A list of reviewers, in alphabetical order by surname (or a general ‘thank you’ where naming is not appropriating) on the journal website A list of editors, in alphabetical order by surname on the full text What is the benefit? Recognition of contribution When will it happen? Reviewers – Available now, published annually; Editors - By the end of 2014 Please contact your Journal Development Editor

Gateways Rebuild What is it? Rebuild of our “gateway” sites What’s the benefit? Refresh design and user experience New functionality e.g. faceted search, article recommendations, enhanced reader Faster updates to content Enhance brand, build trust and credibility, grow user satisfaction When will it happen? April/May 2014

Copyright Update What is it? Upgrade to CC-BY 4.0 Creative Commons Attribution license What’s the benefit? The license is designed to allow the benefits of open access to be fully realized via a simplified attribution requirement When will it happen? Articles submitted on or after 3 February 2014, if accepted, are now published under CC-BY 4.0

Journal Apps What is it? A journal-branded app What’s the benefit? Mobile- and tablet-friendly content Android and Apple apps Online reading functionality When will it happen? Apps can be created now - please contact your Journal Development Editor

What is it? A cross-publisher initiative to link together related clinical trial content (from trial registration through to publication of results and data) into a “Thread of Publications” Based on unique clinical trial number and making use of CrossMark What’s the benefit? Increases transparency and access to clinical trial content Allows for linking to future content without updating the original content When will it happen? Working group setup including BMC, Springer, BMJ, Lancet, PLoS, F1000, ISRCTN, and Wellcome Trust Pilot in Q Threaded Publications

What is it? ISRCTN 4th largest clinical trial register in the world with trials registered The website is being completely redeveloped, rebranded and relaunched What’s the benefit? To better meet the needs of users - Clinical Trialists, Researchers, Funders and the general public To improve internal efficiency and better meet changing demands of trials community When will it happen? User and market research underway; development began in Feb 2014 Relaunch planned for Q Redevelopment of ISRCTN Clinical Trial Register
