What are the characteristics of a mammal?  hair or fur  females feed their babies by suckling milk (mammary glands )  sweat glands  a backbone  3 middle ear bones for hearing  warm blooded  a specialized neocortex region in the brain

What are the Characteristics of Mammals? Unique Mammal Characteristics The females ☞ mammary glands ☞ produce milk ☞ feed their young ones ☞ Latin word ☞ Mamma=breast All mammals ☞ hair Three bones in the middle ear ☞ malleus, incus, and stapes(which are more commonly known as the hammer, anvil and stirrups respectively) General Characteristics of Mammals Jaws(all other vertebrates) ☞ more than one bone (mammals) ☞ a single bone Mammals ☞ unique heart ☞ four chambered heart(like birds) ☞ the main artery turns left ☞ In birds it turns to the right ☞ in all other vertebrates, there are more than one artery that originate from the heart Two sets of teeth ☞ replaced only once A sheet of muscles and tendons ☞ diaphragm ☞ separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity A backbone ☞ vertebrates Warm blooded animals ☞ body temperature ✘ fluctuate with that of the environment.

Mammals Categories Prototheria lay eggs Metatheria pouch Eutheria placental mammals In the biological cycle of marsupial animals the young ones are born very early. This is the reason why the young ones of marsupial animals complete their development cycle in their mother's pouch. Most of the animals in this group are extinct. They are represented today by the platypus The name Eutheria comes from the Greek words "well-developed" and the "beast". All living eutherians are placental mammals, the offspring are carried in the mother's uterus until fully developed.

Mammals’ size Mammals vary greatly in size. The smallest mammal is the shrew with a body that is only a little more than 2 inches long and weighs less than some insects. In contrast, the largest mammal is the blue whale, which can sometimes measure up to 100 feet long and weigh as much as 150 tons

The Evolution of Mammals Fish are one of the most ancient animals. fish living near the shoreline began getting attracted towards land. Many of these fish eventually developed their fins into a leg-like structure, and also developed lungs for land breathing.
