Presentation transcript:

Science Safety and Journaling Unit 1 Lesson 1 TEKS: 5.1, 5.1A, 5.4, 5.4A, 5.4B Students will understand that safety is important during science investigations. They will also learn how to organize data, charts, graphs, illustrations, and other information into their science journals

Engage – Dressed for Safety On your index card, draw a representation of yourself wearing appropriate safety equipment for a lab investigation You will be saving your drawings

Safety Rules Always wear safety goggles whenever you are working with chemicals or other substances that might get into your eyes In what type of activities would wearing goggles and/or gloves be required?

Safety Rules Never reach across a flame

Safety Rules Immediately notify your teacher if any chemical gets on your skin or clothing to find out what to do to clean if off.

Safety Rules Never look directly into a test tube when mixing or heating chemicals

Safety Rules Never smell a chemical directly from the container. Wave your hand over the opening of the container and “waft” the fumes towards your nose.

Safety Rules Never taste, eat or drink anything in the lab unless you are instructed by your teacher to do so.

Safety Rules Always clean up your work area and equipment after an experiment is completed. Equipment must be returned to its proper place.

Safety Rules Read and follow all directions exactly as they are written. If in doubt, ask your teacher for help.

Safety Rules Never mix chemicals (or perform tests) without your teacher’s permission.

Safety Rules Never run (or push someone ) in the lab AT ANY TIME!

Safety Rules Keep lids on bottles and containers when not in use.

Safety Rules Never use broken or chipped glassware.

Safety Rules Always clean up your work area and equipment after an experiment is completed. Equipment must be returned to its proper place.

Safety Rules Immediately notify your teacher if you get cut or have another injury when performing an experiment.

Safety Rules Wash your hands before and after each experiment.

Safety Why is it important to know where to find and how to operate safety equipment in the lab? Why is it important to wear safety goggles while working with chemicals during class? Name some chemicals you might have in your house that we might use in science. Did you know that everyday substances and chemicals might be dangerous???? Why is it important to conduct science investigations in a safe manner?

Science Class rules 1. I will act responsibly at all times during science activities. 2. I will follow the teacher’s instructions and laboratory instructions carefully. 3. I will wear safety goggles and protective clothing appropriately when instructed to do so. 4. I know the class emergency plan and will notify the teacher of any emergency. 5. I will tie back long hair, remove jewelry, and wear closed- end (both toes and heels) shoes when instructed to do so. 6. I will not taste, eat, drink, or inhale anything during science class unless instructed to do so by the teacher. 7. I will tell the teacher if I see someone or something that is unsafe.

Safety Contract Contract – Must be returned for tomorrow’s class I have reviewed these safety rules with my teacher and my parent/guardian. I agree to follow these rules and any additional instructions, written or verbal, given by the school and/or teacher. Science Journals You will be required to use your science journal throughout the year! Journals will be collected and graded We use composition books for journals. Distribute – Science Notebook label – Guidelines for journal – Students will also need their safety contract and their drawing

Front Cover On the front cover, glue a Science Notebook label.

Inside Cover Glue the “Safety Contract” that you have had signed and returned.

Scientific Processes Problem – The question we want to investigate What do you want to know???

Scientific Processes Think about what might be an answer to your problem and make a statement about it. The statement is always written as an “if”….”than” statement!

Scientific Process Do the Experiment! Make sure you have all the equipment you need and have a procedure to follow. Gather your data and record your information

Scientific Process Record your results using pictures and words.

Scientific Processes Write a conclusion that describes your claim and the evidence you found to determine if your experiment support your hypothesis

Information about Measurement

Vocabulary Procedures: A fixed, step-by-step sequence of activities or course of action with a definite start and end point that must be followed in the same order to correctly perform the task.. Safety Equipment: Any equipment specifically designed to minimize injury or death. Work related examples safety goggles, steel toed work boots, construction site helmets, gloves and aprons.
