Lab Safety Seventh Grade Science 9/9/2014

Do Now Share your homework form last night with your partners. Did you write similar lab safety rules? Can you agree on one rule that is most important? After discussing your rules and ideas, write the one you agree is most important on your do now sheet.

Lab Safety Guidelines

General guidelines for all labs Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times during the lab. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ask the teacher before beginning. Students may not work on a lab without a teacher in the room. When first entering a science room DO NOT touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials in the lab area until you are instructed to. DO NOT eat food, drink, or chew gum during labs. Be prepared for you work in the lab. Read all procedures thoroughly before starting the lab.

Materials Take only as many lab materials as you need for the lab. Be alert and pay attention to where the lab materials are at all times. Dispose of all wastes properly. NEVER mix chemicals. Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth and nose while using chemicals or preserved specimens. Wash hands with soap and water after all labs. When using sharp instruments, always carry with tips and points pointing down and away from others. Always cut away from your body.

Accidents and injuries Report any spill, breakage, or injury to the teacher immediately.

Handling chemicals All chemicals during labs are to be considered dangerous. DO NOT touch, taste, or smell any chemical unless specifically instructed to do so.

Deadlines ALL lab reports are expected to be handed in on time!! They should be neat and organized!!

Lab Safety Scenarios Work with your partners to determine and write down the following answers: What lab safety rules are being broken? What should the students have done instead? What should the students do now?

Lab Safety Scenario A Sam and Max are lab partners. Mrs. Stabler is explaining the lab procedures to the class, but Sam and Max aren’t listening, Sam is asking Max what the homework is for Social Studies. Now its time to start the lab, but neither student knows what to do.

Lab Safety Scenario B Alexa and Mary are lab partners. They listened closely to the instructions Mrs. Stabler gave at the beginning of class, so they know exactly what to do. Mary has collected the lab materials, she wants to make sure they won’t have to stop the lab for more, so she has taken double the supplies needed.

Lab Safety Scenario C Denise and Matt are lab partners. Denise wasn’t paying attention to the lab instructions, and she has made a mistake while mixing some chemicals. Matt wants to tell Mrs. Stabler, but Denise doesn’t want to get in trouble.

Lab Safety Scenarios Work together to write your own lab safety scenario. We will share them with the class to see if your classmates can determine what rules are being broken.

Exit Pass Which lab safety guideline do you feel is the most important? EXPLAIN
