Tips for Success IHI Expeditions

What is an Expedition? expedition (noun) 1. an excursion, journey, or voyage made for some specific purpose 2. the group of persons engaged in such an activity 3. promptness or speed in accomplishing something

What is an Expedition? A two- to four-month, interactive, web-based program Helps front-line teams make rapid improvements in some of the areas of greatest concern to hospitals today IHI will launch 10 Expeditions per year. Passport membership entitles you to join as many Expeditions as you would like.

Tips for “Team Gelling” Set goals Align your team’s goals with your organization’s overall aims. Make certain your goals are clear and relevant to both individuals and groups. Begin each team meeting by reviewing the team’s progress toward your goals. Keep your goals and how to meet them as the team’s primary focus.

Tips for “Team Gelling” Build relationships between team members Plan an off-site outing or potluck in the first few weeks of launching your improvement project. Break down the day-to-day barriers of the work place and get to know your team members as individuals rather than just by roles. Learn the details of each team member’s job responsibilities. This will help the team understand each other’s perspectives, constraints, and strengths. Take steps to share news about (and get recognition for) your team’s work. For example, offer a lunch-and-learn on your early successes or contribute to your organization’s newsletter.

Tips for “Team Gelling” Use your data Combine storytelling with your data to engage both the heads and hearts of others. Get and sustain results Assign a project manager to drive the tasks associated with your improvement work and track progress toward your goals. Remember to orient new members to the improvement team. Addressing turnover as it happens helps to ensure continued success. Acknowledge individual accomplishments as well as those of the group.
