Introduction : The Eurodoc Survey I A first attempt Main questions : What is the real situation, concerning current employment situation, social benefits and working conditions, for doctoral candidates and junior researchers in Europe? What are the differences between European countries, cultures and models of doctoral education and what can one learn from such differences?

I. Eurodoc Survey II : plans -Why a Survey II ? -Expansion of the number of countries participating -Experiences and working conditions of DCs and JRs -Good practices and recommendations -Career development of recent PhD graduates

I. Eurodoc Survey II : plans -Variety of forms of doctoral training -Expectations and motivations of doctoral candidates (DCs) -Training experience -Work experience -Funding for DCs/doctoral training -Pathways to doctoral training -Mobility -Career development after degree acquisition

Eurodoc Survey II : Relevance What forms of doctoral training can be found across Europe? – Identify the variety of forms of doctoral training in Europe Expectations and motivations of doctoral candidates – What are the expectations and the motivations of DCs with regard to their doctoral training?

Eurodoc Survey II : Relevance What kind of training experiences are obtained by DCs and recent doctoral degree holders (RDDH)? – to determine the availability of training and supervision and the evaluation DCs and RDDHs make of the training and supervision they had access to Work experience – Kinds of work experiences, application of the Charter & Code

II. Eurodoc Survey II : Relevance What are the main income sources for DCs? What is the social and educational background of DCs and RDDHs across Europe? – Data on the educational pathways of DCs and RDDHs

Eurodoc Survey II : Relevance How mobile are DCs and RDDHs in Europe? – Does the implementation of ERA and EHEA reflect in the geographical mobility of DCs and RDDHs? – Do they search for opportunities in Europe? – What are the hindrances/facilitators for the international mobility with regard to doctoral training? – What forms of international mobility can be distinguished for DCs and RDDHs?

II. Eurodoc Survey II : Relevance Career development after degree acquisition – To which labour markets are RDDHs attracted? – What are the typical pathways for career development of RDDHs? – Does the current employment fit the competencies of the doctoral degree holder – Do doctoral degree holders meet the job requirements? – Do doctorate degree holders working outside academia feel well prepared for their jobs? – What are the main barriers/facilitators for finding adequate employment after graduation?

Conclusion -Doctoral candidates and Junior researchers : a major issue for the ERA and EHEA -A major issue inside HR strategies -A need for a better understanding of this population -A need for a comparative database at the european level
