Graded Membership Structure: Affiliate – working or studying in technical area Associate, Assoc.IScT – Level 2/BTEC Member, MIScT – ≥ Level 3 + Experience Fellow, FIScT – Elected by Fellowship Committee
What do we do? Promote and enhance the profession by: Code of Professional Practice Setting Standards Developing Qualifications Recognition of Skills Liaison with others (HEaTED, ASE, CLEAPSS, unionlearn, etc.)
Qualifications and Awards Certificate in Laboratory Technical Skills National Vocational Qualifications CPD for technicians in schools and colleges Registered Practitioner Higher Diploma

Non-Science Technicians? The IST’s Registered Practitioner Scheme
IST’s Registered Practitioner Registered Practitioners must be competent by virtue of their education, training and experience:- to exercise technical judgement in and assume responsibility for their technical duties; to understand the reasons for and the purposes of the operations for which they are responsible; to be aware of the business, management, safety, social and economic context of their work
Qualifications – Level 3 and above* Experience includes: – exercise of independent technical judgement at an appropriate level – design, development and operation of sophisticated apparatus/ equipment and procedures – communications skills and involvement in human and industrial relations – maintaining a responsible and safe attitude * Route available for those without appropriate formal qualifications IST’s Registered Practitioner
Applicants for admission to the Register must submit: full details of qualifications IST membership number and grade of membership an extended CV including experience and current responsibilities evidence of professional and personal development (PPD) two professional references including one from the current supervisor or line manager IST’s Registered Practitioner
Registered Practitioners are permitted to use the post-nominal, designatory letters MIScT(Reg) or FIScT(Reg) Registered Practitioners are expected to abide by the IST’s Code of Professional Conduct Registration has to be renewed each year and evidence of Professional and Personal Development must be provided
Fees – £25 for initial registration – £25 for annual renewal (in addition to IST membership fee) IST’s Registered Practitioner
