Session Objectives  To build the confidence of participants to know how to prepare and deliver effective TV & radio interviews  To provide tips on interviewing techniques, public speaking and contents of a good message  To move from theory to practice

Importance of working with media  Can’t afford not to  Power to change the world  We need the media because we have a message to put out  Media have a role to play in the fight against HIV

The Media  TV, radio, newspapers, magazines  Internet – news, blogs, online publications  Local, national & global

What to do when approached to do media work?   Think carefully about what you are you are being asked to do   Get some advice and support   Don’t be afraid to say ‘NO’.   To engage the media or not is entirely your decision

 Who is your audience – affected by, affecting something, influential, general awareness  Write down 2 to 3 Key messages – long or shot term messages; changing messages; pro-active; re-active  Stick to what you want to say, don’t get sidetracked  Remember nothing is off the record  You are likely not to be the only source for the story  Journalists tend to work on a story by story basis Preparing

Answering difficult questions  If you do not know the answer say so, do not speculate  Do not get angry, keep calm & a conversational tone  Don’t always answer the question

TV Interviews  Appearance matters  Body language is important  Keep accessories simple  Don’t fidget  Look at interviewer not the camera  Don’t be afraid to challenge media

Radio Interviews  Beware of current issues  Use informal language  Keep it brief  Pre-recorded interviews, you can ask to repeat a question
