Warm Up! (answers) 1) Renewable- Plants, Trees, Animals, Water. As long as they are not over used or made unusable to humans. Nonrenewable- Oil, Coal, Gold, Natural Gas. Perpetual- water, wind, sunlight 2) Traditional- Burns fossil fuels & produces air pollution. Alternative- Uses natural resources and does not produce air pollution (minimal at most) 3) Coal-trees & plants buried in swamps Natural gas & Oil-animals in ocean died & buried 4) Mining- reclamation: putting the land back together

The Objective: SWBAT- Explain the consequences of human activities on the lithosphere and synthesize potential solutions by completing a news report. LEQ: What human activities are affecting the lithosphere? How?

What is Mining? the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth. Impacts: Habitat destruction, air & water pollution, respiratory diseases

What is Deforestation? the removal of trees to clear land for a non- forest use. (e.g. farms, ranches, or urban use) Impacts: Increased erosion (washing away of top soil), loss of habitats & species

What is Agriculture? (farming) the production of plants, animals for food, fiber, and other products used to support human life. Impacts: water pollution from pesticides, fertilizers

What is Overgrazing? when plants are exposed to excessive grazing for long periods of time, or without enough recovery time. What causes it?  livestock, overpopulation of wild animals, poor agriculture practices Impacts: Loss of biodiversity (variety of life)

What is Urbanization the physical growth of urban areas as a result of global change. What are the Impacts?  Heat islands (reduces soil moisture & intensifies carbon dioxide emissions)

What is Overfishing To deplete (use up) the supply of usable fish in a certain area of water *Impacts: extinction of marine fish species, loss of biodiversity, decline in fisheries *Potential Solution: Aquaculture (fish farming!!): raises fish in ponds or fenced areas of water; however, it requires wild fish for feeding, fish crowding occurs, may invade native habitats
