community ) challenge ) excellence ) inspiration ) leadership Maximizing the Classroom Observation Opportunity SAI New Secondary Principals Institute Jen Lindaman, Ankeny Centennial High School 7/23/14

community ) challenge ) excellence ) inspiration ) leadership Our Experience Shape Us Using the notecard provided, reflect on your teaching career, specifically instances in which your principal observed your teaching, and respond to the following: – What was the purpose of you principal’s observation? – What feedback did you receive as a part of the process? – How did you make use of the feedback your principal provided you?

community ) challenge ) excellence ) inspiration ) leadership Our Experience Shape Us With your elbow partner share your responses.

community ) challenge ) excellence ) inspiration ) leadership Observation versus Evaluation Classroom Observation – a formative process of gathering data around teacher learning targets to provide feedback to the teacher regarding growth and to inform future teacher learning(ITPDP, PLC Team Goal) Evaluation – a summative process of determining whether a teacher meets the Iowa Teaching Standards

community ) challenge ) excellence ) inspiration ) leadership Why Is Classroom Observation Important? Observation informs our leadership practice – allows us to more clearly diagnose needs and provide teachers support Feedback provided to teachers spurs self- assessment and reflection Data and evidence provide focus for continued teacher learning and differentiation for teacher learning (ITPDP) Coaching and constant, gentle pressure to change practices occurs through reflective questions Indicates priority of core work and models effective teaching practice

community ) challenge ) excellence ) inspiration ) leadership What Does Classroom Observation Look Like? Target ITPDP goal areas 4-6 times per year (prioritize new teachers) Must provide descriptive feedback and reflective question for teacher to consider Connect the feedback to teacher learning targets Time spent with PLCs as they collaborate also provides evidence of learning Building a culture of observation that extends to peers provides more feedback for teachers

community ) challenge ) excellence ) inspiration ) leadership How Do You Maximize Classroom Observation Opportunities? Block time on your calendar weekly and make it sacred Communicate the importance of this time with all staff – secretary, teachers, APs Invest time in providing descriptive feedback and reflective questions for teachers (master teachers crave it and new and struggling teachers need it) Build capacity in others around you to manage the operations

community ) challenge ) excellence ) inspiration ) leadership Implications for Your Own Practice On the back of your notecard list – 3 new things you learned about classroom observation – 2 implications for your own leadership – 1 question you have about classroom observation Sharing our learning with the group
