Introduction A tenement located at 45J Ma Tau Wai Road collapsed in the afternoon of 29 January 2010 and four people were buried alive and killed. The accident has led to the society’s concern about the repairs of old buildings. The public is also concerned about whether infrastructure works carried out in old districts would affect the safety of the structures of the nearby buildings.

Questions for Reflection 1.How can individuals or organisations contribute to the maintenance and improvement of the quality of life of the residents of old buildings? What are the obstacles to their efforts? 2.How does the Government respond to the people’s demands regarding the maintenance of old buildings?
