HAZARDS IN THE HOME

Hazards in the Home Learning Objective: –Children to understand about potential fire hazards in the home. –Children to understand how to keep safe and prevent fire in the home. –Children to be able to identify basic fire hazards in the home.

Hazards in the Home Success Criteria: –Children will clearly be aware about what potential fire hazards there are in the home. –Children will be able to identify potential fire hazards in the home. –Children will know how to keep safe and prevent fire in the home.

Hazards in the Home Did you know that most accidents and injuries occur due to carelessness! Many of these could be avoided by keeping the building free from hazards. Task: –In pairs share your ideas of what you think are hazards? (Write your ideas down so that we can share them with the rest of the class).

Hazards in the Home In pairs look at the picture. –What hazards can you see? –What could happen?

Hazards in the Home Did you spot the Hazards? –Bookcase blocking the window. –Child standing on the chair. –Bunk bed unstable. –Electrical appliance behind bed. COULD YOU THINK OF ANY MORE?

Hazards in the Home As you can see from the previous slide there are several potential hazards around the bedroom. What other fire hazards could there be in the home?

Hazards in the Home Electrical: Only use one plug per socket. Put safety covers on all unused sockets. Never put fingers or anything else other than a plug in a socket. When unplugging an appliance pull the plug not the cord. Don’t run cables under carpets as they could trip someone. Make sure all electrical appliances are switched off when not in use, especially last thing at night. Don’t use an appliance (e.g. hairdryer) when you have wet hands or are in water. When using electrical hairstyling equipment make sure it is not left near flammable material while it is still on.

Hazards in the Home Candles: Don’t leave them unattended. Put them out completely at night. Keep candles away from anything that could catch fire such as curtains, cards etc. Always put candles and tea lights in a suitable heat resistant stable holder. Keep them out of the reach of young children and pets.

Hazards in the Home Independent Activity 1: –Design a poster giving advice to Children of a similar age highlighting the fire hazards that could be found in the Home.

Hazards in the Home Plenary/Review: –Could you tell me one thing you have learned about fire hazards in the home? –Give me one sentence to describe what you have learned. –What would you like to know more about?
