CHILDREN – Imitate Jesus!

Jesus learned to obey. The Son of God humbled Himself and came in the likeness of man to experience fully life on the earth (Philippians 2:7; Galatians 4:4).

Jesus learned to obey. Jesus experienced the learning period of childhood, the teen years and young adulthood. He grew in wisdom (Luke 2:52). He increased in favor with God and with men. He learned to be a carpenter (Mark 6:3; Matthew 13:55). He subjected to Joseph and Mary (Luke 2:51).

“Children, obey your parents in the L ORD ” (Ephesians 6:1). Obedience is learned. Proper chastisement produces righteousness (Hebrews 12:11) Disobedience to parents is sin (Romans 1:30; Ecclesiastes 11:9). “Obey your parents in all things” (Colossians 3:20). Listen and do what you’re told.

“A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.” (Proverbs 13:1) “A fool despises his father’s instruction, but he who receives correction is prudent.” (Proverbs 15:5) “Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days.... Cease listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.” (Proverbs 19:20, 27)

Honor your parents (Ephesians 6:2-3). Respect greatly, regard highly, esteem properly, treat courteously. How should children be honoring parents? With polite words. With thoughtful deeds of kindness. With the keeping of parents’ family rules. With diligent completion of expected tasks.

“A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.” (Proverbs 10:1) “A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish man despises his mother.” (Proverbs 15:20) “A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him.” (Proverbs 17:25)

Honor your parents (Ephesians 6:2-3). Showing godly honor to parents must continue into adulthood. Jesus rebuked religious men who excused themselves from family obligations toward their parents (Matthew 15:3-6). Example of Jesus taking care of His mother (John 19:26).

“He who mistreats his father and chases away his mother is a son who causes shame and brings reproach.” (Proverbs 19:26) “Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be put out in deep darkness.” (Proverbs 20:20)

Honor your parents (Ephesians 6:2-3). Honoring parents includes providing proper care of them in their older years (1 Timothy 5:4). Physical care, love and honor in spite of its challenges.
