Problems "Approximately “884 million people in the world do not have access to safe water” (WaterAid). Half the children in the world live in poverty and 400 million or 1 in 5 child hasn’t access to safe drinking water. This can be due to the lack of water resources near by or natural disasters. About 1.4 million children die each year from the lack of access to safe drinking water (Global Issues) Estimated that women and girls use more than 8 hours a day traveling from 10 to 15 km to transport between 20 and 15 liters of water” (Awid). "About 4 billion cases of diarrhoea per year [worldwide] cause 1.8 million deaths, over 90 per cent of them (1.6 million) among children under five" (UNICEF). Studies also show that "88% of that burden is attributable to unsafe water supply, sanitation and hygiene." (WHO).

Our Solution: LifePump The LifePump is a portable microbiological water purifying device based on the same filtration system used in the LifeStraw. It is designed to supply clean water to people living in harsh conditions. -developing countries -after natural disasters -camping/military It will assist in reducing the amount of disease carried through unsafe drinking water.

How it works? The LifePump uses a foot pump as a quick way to transfer water from the source to a container (i.e. Q-Drum). When in use, one end of a water tube is to be placed into the water source, while the other end is attached to the foot pump. On the other side of the foot pump will be the second water tube placed in the water container. Once the user begins to press down on the foot pedal, water will be pumped through the tube and into a filter. The filter system then removes viruses, bacteria, parasites, and even dirt from the source water. The filtered water then passes through the second tube and into the container.

LifePump

Filter

Benefits It allows for quick and easy access to clean drinking water which can hopefully reduce the amount of sickness and deaths due to water born illness in developing countries. The LifePump gathers and filters the water then sends it directly to the water storing container. The filter installed in the LifePump eliminates all impurities and bacteria ensuring that the water is safe and drinkable. The benefit of initially having clean water pumped into the storage containers, rather then taking the water directly from the source then purifying it, is that it will maintain the cleanliness of the storage containers so there will be less bacteria build up in them. The foot pump is also an efficient way to get water quickly using just human energy to power the pump.

Price The price of the LifePump purification system is less compared to the LifeStraw as the LifePump can be used by multiple families which reduces the average cost per person. Our goal is to provide the LifePump for approximately $10.00.

Differences What makes LifePump unique? -uses a foot pump to make the filtration process quicker and easier than current available products -no running water needed to operate -keeps water storage container clean Compared to other products Aqua Sun: heavy weight, not portable, and requires electricity (vehicle or solar power). LifeStraw: uses suction only for individual use LifeStraw Family: uses gravity (water is dripped slowly), less portable

Future The LifePump ensures the health of children and parents alike to protect future generations. Possible usage in developed countries after a natural disaster has occurred when clean drinking water is not readily available (i.e. flood) Possible usage for harsh circumstances such as military use and camping.
