WG-CSAB Updates Spring 2013 COPC Meeting (FNMOC, Monterey, California) November 20-21, 2013 Dave McCarren WG-CSAB Chair

Overview  WG-CSAB membership  Federal Plan for Cooperative Support and Backup Among OPCs  High Performance Computing  Review the COPC AI Status

WG-CSAB Current Membership CNMOC and NUOPC Liaison Mr. Dave McCarren (Chair) AFWA RepresentativeMr. Ken Smith FNMOC RepresentativeMr. Jim Vermeulen NAVO RepresentativeMr. Lamar Russell NCEP Representative Dr. James Yoe NESDIS RepresentativeMr. Keith Amburgey NWS/TOC RepresentativeMr. Bob Bunge OFCM Executive SecretaryMr. Ken Barnett JAG/ODAA Co-chairMr. Dennis Hobson (AFWA) JAG/ODAA Co-chairMr. Kyle Rushing (NAVO) JAG/CCM ChairMr. Craig Wade (NESDIS) JAG/OCM ChairDr. Mark Swenson (FNMOC) *New to this group or role since the last COPC meeting

Federal Plan for Cooperative Support and Backup Among OPCs COPC Action Item : Review and update the Federal Plan for Cooperative Support and Backup Among Operational Processing Centers (FCM-P ). CSAB was hoping that more of the data exchange would be completed before updating the P14. (i.e. NFG) CSAB will work to update the P14 in the spring and publish a version with a 2014 date. CSAB recommends keeping this action open. 4

High Performance Computing (HPC) COPC Action Item : OPCs will staff a JAG/HPC for six months every two years to coordinate and plan a bi-annual high performance computing (HPC) best-practices meeting. At the 2011 Fall COPC meeting, the OPCs will identify appropriate system experts and senior staff for JAG/HPC who will identify shared challenges and best practice of interest to multiple OPCs, develop agenda, conduct meeting, generate report and address proposed actions to present at the 2012 Spring COPC meeting. Keep on hold? 5

Status of the COPC AIs : Provide a recommendation briefing to NOPC to address the DoD-NOAA (COPC) network single point-of-failure. (Close) : Review and update the Environmental Satellite Data Annex to the DAPE MOA. (Keep Open) : Develop a Space Weather Data Annex to the DAPE MOA. (Keep Open) : Arrange a briefing from DISA summarizing the test results of data latency through the NFG. CCM will report the findings and recommendations to CSAB and COPC. (Close) : : Implement an end-to-end latency test exchange using representative proxy data from NOAA (NESDIS, TOC, and NCEP) through NFG to each DOD OPC. (Keep Open) : Arrange to have the UEO present evaluation results for candidate NUOPC products at the next COPC, with the goal of approving selection of NUOPC products to be made available for user access. (Close) : Identify areas of overlap for possible collaboration, from each Centers’ modeling plans for (Keep Open) : Coordinate an update to be briefed to the next COPC by the JCSDA describing collaborative efforts to improve the exploitation of atmospheric motion vectors. (Close) : Review and update the Federal Plan for Cooperative Support and Backup Among Operational Processing Centers (FCM-P ). (Keep Open) : At the next COPC meeting give an update on how NOAA will connect to the Backup PDA in Fairmont and what connectivity there will be between the Backup PDA and DOD. (Keep Open) : Each OPC to provide anticipated GOES-R implementation strategy; expressly addressing data receipt mechanism/methodology and impacts to processing infrastructure. (Keep Open)

Status of the Other COPC AIs : Develop an approach to address the OPCs’ data quality control techniques for assimilation into the models. Possibly developing an ad hoc meeting/s to share data quality control techniques and to determine how the OPCs can share information to help advance the science. (Keep Open) : Review and prepare the Data Acquisition, Processing, and Exchange (DAPE) MOA for the signature. (The DAPE needs legal review and expires in Sept 2013.) (Close) : Work with the Product Distribution and Access (PDA) Project Manager to understand the critical milestones for the implementation of the PDA and how this will impact the DAPE Gateway and DOD partners. (Keep Open) : Review and provide preferred priority of work associated with ESPC thaw with particular attention to the GOES experimental hourly winds. (Keep Open) : OPCs will staff a JAG/HPC for six months every two years to coordinate and plan a bi-annual high performance computing (HPC) best-practices meeting. (On Hold) : NESDIS to track and share JMA rebroadcast and HRIT downsampled product offerings. JAG ODAA to assess mutual center needs for obtaining Himawari via cooperative share relationship with JMA. (Keep Open) : NCEP (in particular NCO) will host a teleconference meeting/s with the DOD OPCs to develop the way forward with NOMADS. 1) Investigate alternative paths (besides Internet) for the operational use by the OPCs. 2) Discuss architecture and backup capabilities. 3) Solve getting the DOD data flows on the NOMADS server for distribution. (Keep Open)
