Current Situation of the State Minnesota added 8,500 jobs in June, up from May’s gain of 7,200 Annual growth rate finally matches national growth of 1.9% State unemployment rate fell to 4.5% in June, driven by a decline in a decreased labor force participation rate (70.3%), -.2% Local Government, Education and Health, and Trade and Transportation gained the most Average workweek increased to all time high of 34.5 hours St. Cloud continues to outpace every MSA in the state in terms of added employment (+2.8% OTY change)

Kanabec has 3 rd highest unemployment rate Mille Lacs has 4 th highest rate

Available Labor Force

EDR 7E Changes in unemployment rate driven by employment, not as much by labor force changes…

Unlike recent changes in the states unemployment rate, EDR 7E rate changes are almost entirely dependent on fluctuations of employment. As the rate drops and labor force stays constant, employment increases. As rate drops and employment stays constant, labor force drops.

The relationship between Employment and Unemployment is much less correlated at the state level. With Employment holding steady the rate of unemployment is driven less by employment or unemployment but rather the changes in the labor force. State of MN Employment changes

Employment levels have rebounded, but they are still -697 jobs short of the prerecession peak in While it represents only a 1.4% decrease the employment recovery has not been robust enough to erase the recession.

Employment in the Health Care industry The subsector Hospitals is suppressed to protect the employers. While there is 66% more employment in Nursing and Residential Care than Ambulatory Health Care there is only 52% of the firms.

-Employment in the Ambulatory industry is up 367 jobs, +17.3% -Nursing/Resident ial Care is down 203, -4.7% -Social Assistance is up 34, +2.7% Wages are -14%, -.9%, and +2.8% respectively.

Possible explanations include expanded hiring in lower paying assistant and admin positions. Employment in this sector has increased 194%, average wages have decreased 31.2% from % of jobs in this industry are in office and admin support for Central Planning Area
