University Student Launch Initiative Preliminary Design Review University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Team Rocket
Vehicle Summary Dimensions Length: 123” Diameter: 4” Motor Mount: 43” Weight: 20 lbs Location of center of pressure: 95” from nose Location of center of gravity: 76” from nose Thrust to weight ratio: calibers of stability Materials All body components are made of fiberglass Kevlar shock cords Nylon Parachute
Vehicle Summary
Vehicle Collaborate with NAR member throughout the entire construction process Multiple computer simulation will be analyzed to ensure rocket performs as desired and in a safe manner Ground tests will be conducted to verify optimal performance of recovery system and subsystems
Motor Selection Aerotech 54 mm K828FJ reloadable motor Altitude optimization tests performed in OpenRocket to reach 5,280 feet
Motor Selection
Motor Safety Motor will be purchased by overseeing NAR member and he will be present during all handling of motor Store materials in proper containers Wear proper protection when handling Inform all team members of proper handling procedures and have MSDS sheets readily available
Payload Design Main sensors will be attached to the Arduino PerfectFlite altimeter will be used to determine the altitude of the rocket Altus Metrum GPS will contain an accelerometer and GPS system Information from Arduino, PerfectFlite altimeter, Altus Metrum GPS will all be transmitted to a ground computer
Payload Design
Payload Safety Payload may become too large for the rocket so team members must communicate effectively to ensure this does not occur There could be a payload connection failure. Design of payload must prevent this. Plenty of testing is necessary Component, subsystem, and system testing Sensors may fail. A large amount of testing can prevent this
Payload Safety Continued LEDs Power Switches Sufficient testing must be done to resist data logging failure Redundancy Components may not handle acceleration.
Recovery System Dual Deployment System Rocket Man R12 Nylon for main parachute Kevlar Shock Cords
Recovery System Safety Ground tests will be conducted to ensure that the parachutes eject properly Learn proper parachute folding procedures
