Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved. North Korea: Last Stalinist State Should the U.S. begin diplomatic relations with North Korea in an effort to stabilize the region and hopefully to disarm the country? a)YES. The U.S. should begin diplomatic relations with the North Koreans so that we can ensure peace in the Pacific Rim. We would also be protecting ourselves because North Korea has missiles that can reach the U.S. b)NO. North Korea is a rogue state and we can only deal with it with sanctions and, if necessary, with force. Diplomatic relations will not work because we have already seen North Korea renege on many of its agreements.

North Korea: Last Stalinist State Would bilateral or multilateral talks between the U.S. and North Korea be most effective? a)The U.S. should engage in bilateral talks directly with North Korea. b)The U.S. should stick with the five party multilateral talks that include China, Japan, and South Korea. c)The U.S. should not engage in talks of any kind with a rogue nation like North Korea.

Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved. North Korea: Last Stalinist State Given the buildup of 1.2 million members of the North Korean military, what should the U.S. do with its 30,000 troops on the demilitarized zone? a)We should bring them home, and work for diplomatic solutions. b)We should leave them there as a symbolic wall to stop North Korea from encroaching on South Korea again. c)We should actively build up the number of troops on the demilitarized zone to keep South Korea safe.
