Urbanization & Globalization: The growth of cities & uniting together

Growth of the city Urbanization refers to a process in which an increasing proportion of an entire population lives in cities and the suburbs of cities Urbanization is associated with industrialization (modernization) In 1820, 5% of the US population lived in cities US industrializes 1900: 50% lived in the cities, Today about 70% live in the cities

In developing nations, urbanization is also occurring In 1950, only 17% of people in developing nations lived in an urban area Today nearly 41% live in an urban area The Earth itself is also becoming more urbanized. 30% lived in urban areas in 1950, today 50% live in urban areas

1. How much has urbanization increased in the past 50 years in both developed & developing countries?

#1 Tokyo, Japan #3 Mexico City, Mexico #4 New York City, USA # 2 Seoul, South Korea

A Global Community Globalization is a process by which the people of the world are unified into a single society and function together This can include economic, technological, cultural and political forces Positive points of globalization 1.More competition leads to more educated people – since you are competing with the world you need to offer more 2.Poor countries like India & China are seeing their economies grow Negative Aspects of Globalization 1.Wealthier nations/businesses take advantage of poorer people using them as cheap labor (sweatshops = more profits) 2. People in wealthy nations are losing jobs living since jobs move to cheaper areas
