Biography Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands. He was a post-impressionist painter whose work, notable for its beauty, emotion and color, highly influenced 20th century art. He struggled with mental illness, and remained poor and virtually unknown throughout his life. Van Gogh died in France on July 29, 1890, at age 37, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

ARTWORK The Potato Eaters was completed in It is considered by many to be Van Gogh's first great work of art. At the time of its creation, Van Gogh had only recently started painting and had not yet mastered the techniques that would later make him famous. His goal was to paint human figures that did not appear to be awkward, but rather existing naturally. Portraying the figures in a dark room with light from an oil lamp, however, proved to be a bit too extreme for his newly acquired artistic skills. Potato Eaters, 1885

ARTWORK Paul Gauguin joined Van Gogh in Arles in November 1888, in order to paint together in what Van Gogh called the ‘studio of the south’. After living together for a while their personalities clashed and they argued constantly. After an argument on December 23rd, Van Gogh mutilated his right ear. He was admitted to hospital, and Gauguin returned to Paris. This self-portrait was one of the first works Van Gogh painted after this incident. Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear, 1889

ARTWORK This piece is one of the most famous paintings Van Gogh has painted. After mutilating his ear he checked himself into an asylum called Saint Remy de Provence. This painting depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room. Van Gogh depicted the view at different times of day and under various weather conditions, including sunrise, moonrise, sunshine-filled days, overcast days, windy days, and one day with rain. REFLECTION I liked doing this PowerPoint because I like Vincent Van Gogh's work and I got to see some more of his paintings that I didn’t know about. I also learned some new things about his personal life that I didn’t know before. He is an amazing artist and his works are very successful and well known everywhere.
