September 2015 ISG Director Report Information Systems Group TAC Director Report Jim Rankin– Director Tom Butash – Deputy Director Mitch Ingham – Deputy Director Terry Morris – Deputy Director

September 2015 ISG Director Report 2 Information Systems Group - Overview Goals Grow the recognition of IS people, groups, and focus in AIAA Work to ensure that all TCs are active. Encourage ISG TC members to apply for higher level membership status (Fellow and Associate Fellow)  Can Fellow process be improved to better recognize the work of IS members. Work with AIAA to develop working guidelines for domestic and international co-sponsored conferences. Develop a student competition that features ISG technologies.

September 2015 ISG Director Report 3 Information Systems Group – Recent Accomplishments Sanjay Garg, ISG Director, stepped down in early 2015; Jim Rankin was approved as the new ISG Director until the next election in The was part of SciTech 2015 ISG TCs are involved in SPACE 2015  Information Systems and Software track with 7 technical sessions (3 joint with Space Systems Engineering and Economics) and 1 poster session

September 2015 ISG Director Report 4 Information Systems Group – TC Status Communications Systems – Very Active  TC consists of 40 (members) - 25 US, 14 International, and 1 Alumni Member  Organizes AIAA International Communications Satellite Systems Conference (ICSSC) Computer Systems – Active but needs to grow  The limit on conference attendance has hurt the TC’s meeting attendance  Working to realign TC interests with member interests.  Collaborative with TCs in HPC and Modeling areas Digital Avionics – Very Active  42 members, 6 are international  Active in SciTech, ICNS, and DASC conferences  Established a $25k scholarship at U of Louisiana – Lafayette Information, Command & Control Systems – Struggling  No Annual Report submitted.

September 2015 ISG Director Report 5 Information Systems Group – TC Status (contd.) Intelligent Systems TC – Very Active  32 regular, 6 Associate, 4 International, and 8 Alumni members  Two mtgs in 2015 (SCITECH 2015 and the ISTC Summer Workshop in August 2015)  Second Intelligent Systems workshop held August 5-7, 2015 at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA. Sensor Systems and Information Fusion TC – Active  Total membership 22, which includes 2 Associate, 3 International, and 0 Alumni.  Working on membership recruiting and building relationships with other TCs Software TC – Active  Total membership of the committee is 25, which includes 2 Associate, 0 International, and 0 Alumni.  Formed the Aviation Cybersecurity WG (see later slides)  Involved in SciTech and Space Forums

September 2015 ISG Director Report 6 Information Systems Group – Awards Summary Award NameYearly (Y)/ Biannual (B)Technical Committee“New Venue Aerospace CommunicationsY, Oct 1Communications SystemsSpace (even), ICSSC (odd, non-U.S) Aerospace Software Engineering B, Odd Years, July 1Software SystemsSCITECH Dr. John Ruth Digital Avionics B, Odd Years, July 1Digital AvionicsDigital Avionics Systems Conference (DASC) Information SystemsB, Odd Years, July 1Computer Systems, Sensor Systems & Information Fusion SCITECH Intelligent SystemsB, Even Years, July 1Intelligent SystemsSCITECH Status  Considering a name change for the Information Systems Award to enhance its branding

September 2015 ISG Director Report 7 Information Systems Group – Conferences Conference firmly established at SciTech Forum  Misty Davies and Terry Morris leading in 2016; Terry Morris will lead in 2017 SPACE: Mitch Ingham lead in 2015; continued presence in 2016 & beyond AVIATION: ISG members gave papers but not strongly branded as ISG International Communications Satellite Systems Conference (ICSSC) – CMSTC held with Space Forum in even years, and outside US in odd years  ICSSC co-sponsored or co-organized with AIAA in even years; agreement for 2015  Various issues with CMSTC/ICSSC; currently being worked with TAC/AIAA Digital Avionics System Conference (DASC) and Integrated Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (ICNS) – Digital Avionics TC  Stand alone – co-sponsored by AIAA. In good health ISSUE – Is AIAA leveraging the value from co-sponsoring conferences?

September 2015 ISG Director Report 8 Information Systems Group – Moving Forward Plan Continue to strengthen –well established procedure for selecting leadership team, updating call for papers, documenting best practices etc. Have visible ISG participation at other forums – Aviation, Space, Defense Continue to work with TC Chairs to strengthen Computer Systems and ICCS TCs Work with AIAA/TAC leadership to address co-sponsored conferences issues Look into establishing a Working Group on “Big Data Analytics for Aerospace” Aerospace world is “multi-disciplinary”. Will like to have greater partnership with other Groups for joint sessions at forums – any suggestions?  Good model: 3 SPACE 2015 sessions on Model-Based Systems Engineering, joint with Space Systems Engineering and Economics track Intelligent Systems TC (ISTC) is currently developing a roadmap for the intelligent systems in aerospace – will be shared as possible Public Policy key issue.
