Presentation transcript:

Maximising user experience with IOP Publishing Yann Amouroux Regional Manager, IOP Publishing Direct line:

Agenda l What defines the user experience? l The IOPscience platform l Discovery and delivery l Reporting usage l Licencing the content l Other activities to maximise user experience

What defines the user experience? l Good quality content l Easily searchable l Discoverability l Deliverability

The IOPscience platform l An online service for journal content published by IOP Publishing. l Offers online access to all the journal content hosted by IOP Publishing. l more than 60 titles covering different areas across scientific, technical, medical and engineering research. l more than 400,000 articles from 1874 to the present day.

Discovery and delivery l We currently provide metadata to the main discovery services: l Summon (Serial Solutions) - full text content indexed l Primo Central (Exlibris) - full text content indexed l Ebsco Discovery Service - in negotiation, expect IOP content to be indexed soon

Discovery & Delivery cont l Shibboleth compliant l IOP Publishing supports the Shibboleth authentication system. This means that users from Shibboleth compliant institutions can sign in to IOPscience using their institutional ID and password and gain access, on or off campus, to their subscribed IOP Publishing content. We currently have an agreement to provide Shibboleth authentication to the following federations: l German Higher Education and Research l RCTSaai Portuguese Federation l Fédération Éducation-Recherche l Servicio de Identidad de RedIRIS l UK Access Management Federation

Access l Inter Library Loan l send a paper copy of electronic original non-digitally (not or fax) l Send a copy by secure transmission (Arial) l Course packs l Permitted, but for authorized users only. l Coursepacks, including electronic copies must be deleted at the end of term.

Reporting usage l We are Release 3 COUNTER compliant l Journal Report 1: Successful Full-Text Article Requests l Journal Report 3: Successful Item Requests l Journal Report 5: Number of Successful Full-Text Article Requests by Year-of-Publication and Journal l Consortium Report 1: Number of successful full-text journal article or book chapter requests by month (only available in XML format) l Sushi l We are SUSHI compliant, which is a standard protocol that can be implemented within a library's electronic resource management (ERM) system to automate the usage statistics collection process.

Licencing our content l Single title l Pack l IOPscience extra l Consortia l National licence

Other activities to maximise user experience l Video Abstracts – New Journal of Physics l Launched 2 February 2011 l Brand new content stream aimed at enhancing user experience l A ‘first’ for any physics journal l Completely free-to-view l No additional charge for authors

Video Abstracts - Aims l Increase the visibility of our authors and their work l > 5000 videos viewed within first two weeks l Enable authors to go beyond the constraints of print to present their work l Enhance a user's understanding and appreciation of an article through novel presentation l Humanise the journal by including the researchers behind the work

Video Abstracts – Author quotations A video abstract can add value and visibility to our work since it is a quick and entertaining way (with a lot of room for creativity) to get an idea of the motivation and content of the paper. Oriol Romero-Isart, Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Germany By featuring the people behind the science, video abstracts have the potential to convey inspiration and enthusiasm, and thereby the significance of scientific results, beyond the concise text of articles. Achim Kempf, Waterloo University, Canada
