The Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution Review

How do we elect our US Senators?

Through elections every two years, as a result of the Seventeenth Amendment

What is the Twenty-fifth Amendment?

It sets up the line of succession for the office of president, keeps us from having our entire government decapitated as a result of a terrorist attack, or some other disaster.

What was remarkable about the election of 1800 (Besides the fact that this country actually chose Thomas Jefferson over John Adams for president)

The Electoral College had to be changed, so that we wouldn’t get a President from one party, and a VP from another party.

If no one wins a majority in the Electoral College, who and why gets to select the President?

The House of Representatives because they are the people’s house, with proportional representation of the country

What are enumerated powers? Can you name any?

Those powers of Congress that are listed within the Constitution. I hope you can name a few

How can the President check the power of Congress?

Veto a law passed by both houses, negotiate treaties, appoint officers in the federal government

What rights does the First Amendment protect?

Freedom of speech, religion, press, petition the government for change, and to peacefully assemble.

What is eminent domain?

The government can take your property for public use, but must pay you fair market value

Which Amendment abolished slavery?

The Thirteenth

When did the federal income tax begin?

With the creation of the Sixteenth Amendment

Which amendment make it illegal to drink booze?

The Eighteenth Amendment

What does unalienable mean? What is it associated with?

It means, can’t be separated from, which includes rights that all people have…life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness.

What is the purpose for governments?

To PROTECT our rights. Our rights do not come from the government, they come from nature or from God, however you choose to believe.

Which Amendment gives us the right to own a shot gun?

The Second Amendment

Regards to religion, what does the First Amendment grant us?

No government interference and the right to worship as we choose.

What is federalism?

The separation of authority and responsibility between the federal and state governments, as set up by the Tenth Amendment

Article I of the Constitution does what?

Sets out the power and responsibility of the legislative branch of government

The End If you know all this, you’ll do well, really well. Good luck and I hope you enjoyed this little review!
