INDEPENDENT SAMPLES Two sample are independent if sample data drawn from one population are completely unrelated to the selection of sample data from the other population. An example of this would be when drug companies test a new drug. One group is given the actual medication where the other group is given a placebo or faked medication. After a certain period of time, the two groups are measured for the same condition.

After a certain period of time, the two groups are measured for the same condition. DEPENDENT SAMPLE Two samples are dependent if each data value in one sample can be paired with a corresponding data value in the other sample. An example of this would be a group of students who take an English composition pretest. Then in 1 week, the same group of students get a posttest covering similar material. So there can be a pairing of data values.
