The American Nuclear Society Accelerator Applications Division Presented to the ANS Board of Directors Hollywood, Florida 12 June 2002 Erik B. Iverson, AAD Chair

Division Charter From the Professional Divisions Manual: The division was organized to promote the advancement of knowledge of the use of particle accelerator technologies for nuclear and other applications. It focuses on production of neutrons and other particles, utilization of these particles for scientific or industrial purposes, such as the production or destruction of radionuclides significant to energy, medicine, defense or other endeavors, as well as imaging and diagnostics.

Division Governance Officers §Chair - Erik Iverson §Vicechair - John Ireland §Secretary - Roger Snyder §Treasurer - Seokho Kim §Past-Chair - Rusi Taleyarkhan Committee Chairs §Executive - Erik Iverson §Program - Rusi Taleyarkhan §Nominating - current chair §Honors/Awards - Laurie Waters Members §Mario Carelli (02) §Erik Iverson (02) §Seokho Kim (02) §Rodger Snyder (02) §Rusi Taleyarkhan (02) §Don Dudziak (03) §John Ireland (03) §Gregory Van Tuyle (03) §Paul Lisowski (04) §Jerry Nolen (04) §Laurie Waters (04) §Ed Arthur (05) §Jim Bresee (05) §Detlef Filges (05) §Eric Pitcher (05) §Tom Ward (05) §Karen Corzine (05)

Membership We are still growing rapidly, and anticipate more growth as we add new constituency to the society l 5% of new ANS members in 2001 chose AAD l at end of 2001, 3% of ANS members were AAD members

Membership Demographics

Membership Diversification §The AAD originally came about because of a small number of very large, National Laboratory-related projects l Volatile membership, depending on funding l Very (too?) focused attention §We are broadening our group to include more members from other areas, and from universities and industry

Financial Position §As a new division, we have been working to develop a margin with which we can support our desired activities l student travel support l standing scholarship l paper awards §Current excess over budget is $22,702 §New budget in preparation

Technical Sessions §2002 l June - 2 sessions with 11 papers l November - 6 sessions expecting 30+ papers (no AccApp) §2001 l June - 2 sessions with 10 papers / panelists l November - cosponsored 1 session with 4 papers Embedded AccApp with ~250 attendees, 180 papers §2000 l June - 3 sessions with 14 papers l November - Embedded AccApp with 67 papers

AccApp Topical Meetings §AAD has sponsored a heavy schedule of ambitious and successful topical meetings l Five so far, have until now been annual l most recent was 180 papers, 250 attendees, electronic proceedings §We are scaling back to an 18 month cycle l we feel we are better established now l we want to reduce strain on organizational pool l intend the next topical to be embedded in San Diego

Division Honors and Awards §We have initiated an Honors & Awards Committee §Laurie Waters serving as chair §Have started best paper awards (student and regular) for topical meetings §AAD-sponsored fellow John M. (Jack) Carpenter §AAD-sponsored Nuclear Historic Landmark (IPNS) §Developing standing scholarship from division funds

Message to the Board §As we expand our constituency and bring new members into ANS, we find recurring themes l Meetings are expensive l Publication is expensive l Lead times are long l ANS journals not “the conventional repository” l Most attendees more inclined to publish in “their traditional” journals without page charges §Would like to see “Notes and Deadlines”-style notice/reminder to division chairs/vice chairs

Conclusions §AAD has rapidly grown to be a substantial force within the American Nuclear Society §We are expanding beyond roots in National Laboratory projects to draw in a new, more diverse constituency §We will continue to grow with the Society and look forward to the future
